Beautiful bell tent glamping near the River Dronne

The tiny hamlet of Maucité may be rural – a band of trees wraps around the houses in a green embrace while the River Dronne skirts along one side – but the settlement is not entirely lost to the world. In fact, remote as the place may feel, it boasts two particular assets that the rest of France can be truly jealous of. The first is Moulin Du Roc, a Michelin starred restaurant, less than a kilometer down the road. And the second is Belair le Camping, a newly renovated and regenerated riverside campsite.

Bought by the Pantry family in 2016, Belair le Camping is a fresh, enthusiastic enterprise that has started small and keeps things on a personal scale. The site currently has just five bell tents, pre-pitched and kitted out with double beds and dainty wooden furnishings, and just two grass camping pitches. The lucky glampers and campers that do bag these spots have acres of space to explore. Bikes are available to hire, so you can whizz along the riverside or pedal your way to Moulin Du Roc for that slap up meal, and there’s a raised, over-ground swimming pool where you can while away the sunniest hours.

There are many other ideas in the pipeline, too. Talks of a treehouse are afoot, and a cosy log cabin has just been finished, tucked among the trees in the far corner of the site. An old caravan from the campsite’s previous owners was recently removed and its adjacent wooden shack converting it into a warm communal space with a kitchen area, chiminea, tables and chairs. There's also a projector, so kids can enjoy alfresco screenings, and pool table you can use.

The cobbled avenues of Brantôme are the nearest real attraction of note, its Benedictine abbey a particular highlight, but the real joy of Belair le Camping is the peace of the more immediate surroundings. Birds chirp a sing-song sound track each morning and the hedgerows bulge with fruit as the end of summer approaches.

6m Tent with Jacuzzi
Wonderful week
The tent was beautiful inside and the beds were so comfortable. We felt like we had absolutely everything we could need. Our children absolutely loved the pool and the chickens. It was a wonderful week!

6m Bell Tents - Grassland
We arrived at 4pm and the temperature was 35 celcius. The tent we had been allocated was pitched in full sun and the only shade was from a small parasol. We estimated that the temperature in the tent was well over 40 degrees Celsius and would remain in full sun until at least 7pm. In our opinion it was uninhabitable so we made alternative arrangements, advising the owners by text as they were off site when we arrived. Although, we didn’t stay overnight we are writing this review because we feel that the owners should have provided more shade as the hot weather was not just a one day phenomenon but a prolonged heatwave. Please note that we are not expecting a refund and are experienced campers. We hope that the owners will take our views on board for future guests. We are writing this review at another glamping site in full shade under an awning on our plot during the same prolonged period of very hot weather with the temperature at 32 degrees Celsius.

6m Bell Tents - Grassland
We arrived 4pm temperature 35 Celcius, only shade provided was small parasol, we estimated tent temperature to be in excess of 40 hence uninhabitable. Tent was in direct sunlight and in our estimation, would remain so until at least 7pm. We decided to make other arrangements and left, advising owners of our decision by text as they were off site when we arrived. We have not requested a refund, but would hope that the owners would provide more shade during hot weather for future guests. We are experienced campers and write this review in full shade under an awning at another glamping site in similar conditions.

We had a wonderful weekend stay here! Children loved the pool and prate adventure tree. Very relaxing, family oriented camping with lovely clean facilities and friendly and welcoming hosts. The safari tent was perfect for us. So much to do in the local area too and the village of Brantôme (about 10minutes away) is idyllic. Thank you so much. We hope to be back!

Grass pitch for Campers and Caravanners
Laura and Ben have created a wonderful peaceful haven in which to relax and unwind. Their little touches and attention to detail ensure a stress free stay. The pool and social area are a great asset and the daily croissant delivery a treat. Well located for cycling on quiet country roads with the picturesque Brantome and St Jean de Cole within close proximity. We would not hesitate to recommend. Thank you Laura and Ben.
