A 1 hour drive away is the exquisite setting of Rocamadour. For pilgrims, Rocamadour's importance lies with the 'Shrine of Our Lady', a complex of religious structures centered on a statue of the Virgin Mary and the tomb of an ancient saint. Tourists come here for its religious interest, historical importance, wonderful architecture, but most of all, for the spectacular views, as Rocamadour is situated atop a rocky plateau overlooking the Alzou Valley. Not far from Rocamadour, The Gouffre de Padirac (0033 565 336 456) is a large system of caves. You descend down a long stairway or elevator, and then take a boat on the river, which flows through the cave. There is a lake 30 minutes away with a restaurant, playground and two water slides, or for an animal encounter head to the Deer Valley in Junhac (0033 471 492 968), where you can ride the small train.
