Enjoy a slice of retro Americana at this pop-up campsite in one of North Norfolk's most prized coastal locations

Norfolk isn’t exactly short on country estates. The Queen’s holiday pad in Sandringham is usually the first to spring to mind. But ask anyone who knows North Norfolk well and it’s Holkham you’ll be told to visit. This vast estate really is the jewel in the county’s coastal crown, home not only to an 18th-century house, lake and walled garden, but also a vast national nature reserve and the great sweeping crescent of Holkham Bay, a beach-roamers version of heaven. In fact, as if to admit it’s the better spot, the Queen herself even has a beach hut there.

Now, for 2021, there’s another reason Holkham is the place to choose. In a secluded corner of the estate, there’s a superb new pop-up campsite with space for grass pitches, bell tents and a dining hall with a restaurant and fully licensed bar. There’s a cool, American vibe to the camping at Camp Elwood, the name given to this Holkham pop-up. Surf tunes backtrack the bar – think The Beach Boys, Haim and Dolly Parton – and it’s all about slow cooked meats and Texan flavours. Barbecues are still permitted, if you fancy cooking your own food (they must be raised off the ground) and the amenities mean everyone is thoroughly well catered for, with shower blocks equipped with mirrors and hairdryers and an electrical hook-up option for those in campervans. Folks coming for comfort, meanwhile, will also find a few types of bell tent available for hire, some fully furnished with beds and bedding, others, with simple inflatable mattresses, offering a half-way-house where you bring your own bedding.

The laid-back ambience of the campsite lends itself to guests who just want to spend time chilling out. There are lawn games you can play on the grass in front of the dining hall and board games and cards you can borrow too. There's an almost-festival feel to it, with macramé workshops for campers, evening campfire sessions and, if you need to learn your Mojito from your Manhattan, mixology masterclasses. Pair all this with the good food and summertime tunes and you see why it's a nice place to stick around.

You’d be foolish to come here and not make the most of the wider area though. You can enjoy canoeing and stand-up paddle boarding on the Holkham lake or hire bikes to explore the estate and cycle into the seaside town of Wells, a little over a mile away. In fact, the town, the beach and the coastal path are all close enough to link together into a pleasing circular walk from the campsite, which can happily take you all day if you nose in the shops in Wells, play games on the beach and stop for a snack in the Look Out café before walking back to camp. The rest of Norfolk is yours to explore too. But, remember, there’s a reason the Queen has her beach hut here. You’re probably already in the best place.
