Luxury, en-suite glamping cabins on a quiet, child-free campsite in rural Leicestershire.

The Midshires Way long-distance footpath runs some 230 miles from the Chiltern Hills across the Midlands and the Peak District to Manchester. And somewhere, almost exactly in the middle of the route, there’s a campsite for weary walkers that offers more than just a place to pop a tent. Previously more popular with Camping & Caravanning Club members, this alpaca farm has recently built a handful of superbly crafted glamping cabins that have transformed it from a convenient caravan base to a more luxurious getaway for glampers. Walkers will find it a great stopping point but it’s a holiday destination in its own right too.

Set in 17 rural acres, 15 minutes north of the market town of Loughborough, Midshires Way Campsite has five wood cabins in total, with long, triangular roofs that offer an ode to the traditional tent. Inside, there’s a spacious living area with a kitchen space with an L-shaped worktop that also acts as a breakfast bar. There’s underfloor heating, an en-suite shower room and a separate master bedroom. Outside, meanwhile the real nod to camping is the impressive firepit with a heavy rotating grill pan that you can use to cook over the flames. It's the perfect place to sit out and enjoy a late evening BBQ as you make friends with the gregarious alpacas in the neighbouring field.

If you’re not just here to ramble the local Leicestershire footpaths there’s a decent stock of lesser-known attractions nearby. The John Taylor & Co bell foundry is a particularly intriguing museum, showcasing the old-fashioned production process of humongous church and town hall bells, while steam aficionados will love the Great Central Railway – both are within a 15 minute drive. It’s a little further to the National Trust’s Calke Abbey or Belvoir Castle too (the latter worthwhile as much for the views as the estate and building itself).

Glamping lodges sleep up to two people (towels and linen included), in separate bedrooms. Lodges are fully en-suite and feature a fitted kitchen, dining area and under-floor heating. Caravan and camping pitches are fully serviced and have access to an under-floor-heated washblock with two suites (basin, toilet, walk-in shower). WiFi across the site. Laundry facilities. Secure dog exercise area.

Suitable For

Glampers, campers, tents, campervans, caravans, adults (over 21 years). Children under 16 years old are not allowed on-site.

As the name suggests, the campsite is beside the Midshires Way long distance walking trail (some 230 miles in length) and forms a popular stopping point for ramblers along the route. Since it takes 10–15 minutes to walk into East Leake, walkers are well served for amenities too – there’s a CoOp supermarket, a range of cafés and eateries and takeaways that deliver to the campsite. There’s also a decent leisure centre (01509 852956) for rainy days, with a pool, badminton, tennis, a gym and more. Elsewhere, it’s a 15-minute drive into the market town of Loughborough (market days are Thursday and Saturday), where you can take tours of Taylor's Foundry (01509 212241), an impressive museum displaying bells dating back to 1785, or ride aboard steam trains on the Great Central Railway (01509 632323). It’s 25 minutes into the centre of Nottingham and 30 minutes or so into Leicester, where the National Space Centre (0116 261 0261) is a particularly time-consuming rainy day activity.

Food & Drink

There are four pubs within walking distance in East Leake, The Round Robin (0115 778 8168), which has its own micro brewery, being our pick of the bunch, as well as The Star Inn (01509 856480), a country pub in the opposite direction (25-minute walk). For better choices, however, it is worth the 15-minute drive into Loughborough.

All year.

Glamping lodge stay

My boyfriend and I stayed in a glamping lodge here and loved it. It was very cosy and had everything we needed - including our own shower, kettle, microwave and hob. The local village had good options for food and drink- even with its own micro brewery! The campsite is located not too far away too so it makes it easy enough to walk down into East Leake.
