Stream-side camping near the South Downs, well connected for walking and cycling

In a landscape as rolling as the South Downs, it takes camping near a river to find a space that’s truly flat and ideal for a tent. At King Barn, five miles north of Shoreham, that river is the Ardur, an idle, tidal waterway two minutes’ walk from your tent. It’s shaped the land here. Wide and flat, there are views of Truleigh Hill to the south, miles of bird-friendly meadows to the north and a riverside footpath into Bramber where there are meagre remains of a Norman castle built to overlook and defend the valley. It’s also shaped the campsite itself, with a stream that feeds the river creating a wiggling, natural border to the King Barn Camping field.

There are fewer than 15 pitches at the campsite in total, numbered and strung out along the curved, vehicle-free, meadow overlooking the stream. Kings Barn is a working farm and everything is off grid, though that hasn’t prevented the owners from installing gas-powered showers and a surprisingly luxurious set of composting loos. It also means that tent campers reign supreme (caravans and motorhomes are not allowed) and there’s a general old-school camping atmosphere, with a campfire pit at every pitch, well-behaved dogs welcome and campers generally arriving with bikes or paddleboards in tow for exploring the local area.

And when it comes to getting out there’s plenty to do. The riverside footpath is the obvious place to start but if you’re after more rolling routes it’s not far to the South Downs Way and a 20-minute drive to its passage through V-shaped Devil’s Dyke or to hilltop Cissbury Ring. The lane that passes the campsite gate, meanwhile, is part of the Downs Link cycle way, a family-friendly and largely off-road route that you can follow all the way south to Shoreham Beach half an hour’s ride away (or 15 minutes in the car). Not that you need to cycle that far. The campsite’s only just outside the villages of Bramber and Steyning, where there are good pubs and tea rooms within about five minutes’ cycle of your tent.
