Boutique glamping and camping in the North Wessex Downs, with immediate access to the White Horse Trail

Some places leave a lasting impression as soon as you arrive. The North Wessex Downs is one example, the undulating downland and ancient forests rightfully inspiring literary greats. Highway Hill is another, a rural idyll with a clutch of shepherd’s huts and bell tents in a quiet paddock beyond a farm. And, since 2021, there’s even a tiny pop-up campsite, too, so those with their own tents can also come and share in a slice of the quiet country pie.

Down a single lane road, guests arrive to a yard of farm buildings before spilling out to a parking area with the glamping paddock beyond. Shepherd’s huts are tucked beneath birch trees, featuring fitted beds, wood-burners and fully equipped kitchens, making them the natural choice for a romantic break. The bell tents, meanwhile, are slightly more spacious (sleeping up to six people) and cater nicely to families. Inside, bunting abounds, fairy lights festoon the central pole and thoughtful little touches like vintage trunks, vibrant throws and a wood burner mean the bells are equally inviting on cooler evenings.

In the height of summer, meanwhile, the pop-up campsite (the ‘Windmill Hill’) also appears, set in a separate meadow and with its own portable-style toilets, gas-powered showers and a communal kitchen tent. There are bell tents in this camping area, too, those these don’t have wood-burners since they’re geared up for the warmth of summer. All guests also have access to additional toilets and a disabled-access shower near the reception and car park area.

What’s notable at Highway Hill is the clear thought that’s gone in to every detail. There are conscientious extra touches like hammocks and high-chairs and, for glampers, basic provisions, from tea and porridge to lanterns and linen, are all supplied. They recently added wood-fired hot tubs you can book, too, after feedback from their glampers.

Both on site and off there’s ample to entertain. There are pygmy goats and alpacas to meet and there are plenty of footpaths leading straight from the farm. The long-distance White Horse Trail runs up the slope opposite the entrance, leading to the Cherhill White Horse, one of 13 iconic equine chalk figures that dot the Wiltshire hillsides. The mysterious stone circles at Avebury and the neolithic burial tomb at West Kennet Barrow are also nearby, while the Georgian-Roman splendour of Bath is 45 minutes away. So you can do a whistle-stop tour of England through the ages before returning to your timeless retreat in the hills.

Facilities

Our whole venue nestles in 100 acres of private land and forms part of the majestic North Wessex Downs - giving you endless freedom to roam without (hardly) bumping into a soul.

Bell Tents and Shepherd's Huts offer all the comforts of home and are spaced apart to create maximum privacy.  Our pitch-your-own plots offer plenty of space for you to spread out as you wish whilst not disturbing your fellow campers. We use only eco-friendly cleaning products and, where possible, environmentally-friendly items which allows us to create an extremely healthy environment, support our planet and reduce our carbon footprint. We also offer an optional food delivery service straight to your door, should you wish.

Each Shepherd's Hut has electric lighting and plug sockets, plus a fridge or electric coolbox, and induction or gas hob.  Bell tents don't have electricity but do have battery-powered lights. Tent guests can access electric sockets either in the communal Safari Tent (where you will also find cooking facilities) down on the Highway Hill site, and in the communal outdoor kitchen in the Windmill Hill site.

The Highway Hill site has 2 showers and 3 toilets next to the campsite, with another 3 toilets and 1 shower next to the office/reception and kitchen; of these, 1 of the toilets, plus the shower, is wheelchair accessible. The Windmill Hill has 2 gas heated showers and 2 brand new portaloos - guests can also use the shower and toilets located next to the office/reception.

Shepherd's huts and all Windmill Hill plots have fire bowls that can be used as a BBQ/firepit.  The Bell tents at Highway Hill have a large shared BBQ, perfect for summer evenings. All Highway Hill and Windmill Hill guests have access to the large campsite fire pit (complimentary firewood is provided). There are board games, cards and jigsaws to borrow, plus maps and books detailing local walks and flora and fauna.

Our accommodation is finished to an extremely high standard. Wood burning stoves offer cosy nights in (apart from in our Windmill Hill bell tents), whilst our cotton bedding makes for a great night’s sleep.

Our Highway Hill site also has two stunning wood fired hot tubs which you can hire privately for you stay.

There are also several other Neolithic sites in the region, such as West Kennet Long Barrow. The Georgian stately home, Bowood House (01249 812102), is about a 15 minute drive away and features a famous adventure playground for the little ones, as well as stunning grounds designed by Capability Brown. The iconic city of Bath, with its Roman and Georgian attractions, is also just 45 minutes away.

The Owner Says

Escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life in order to get back to nature is incredibly important for our wellbeing. Set deep in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside, Highway Hill provides luxury outdoor accommodation for families and couples who love the outdoor life but don’t want to compromise on comfort. We’re located at the end of a leafy country lane in 100-acres of private land within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; a stunning landscape of ancient woods, gently meandering chalk streams and rolling downland.

Even though we do say so ourselves, staying at Highway Hill is a very special experience; one that’s perfect for seasoned campers and newbies alike. You can choose a romantic, hand-crafted shepherd’s hut for two or spend a night under canvas in one of our comfy and spacious family-sized bell tents; our Hayloft venue is perfect for special occasions, meetings, classes and group events. In exciting news, we now also have a second campsite, operating for only 8 weeks over the summer. The site is on our Windmill Hill field and will house two fully furnished bell tents and four pitch-your-own camping plots.

Our accommodation is finished to an extremely high standard and we also have two wood fired hot tubs new for 2021. Wood burning stoves offer warm, cosy nights in whilst our futons and soft, snuggly bedding make for a dreamy night’s sleep. Spend the evenings barbecuing on one of the many fire pits then, as night falls, toast marshmallows, share stories or while away the night watching the dying embers before drifting off to sleep under the stars.

Easy to find, yet hidden away, Highway Hill offers the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Simply turn up, switch off and immerse yourselves in nature.
