Luxury glamping lodges in the heart of France's Périgord Noir.
Located just outside Thenon, an enticing little village in the South-West of France, Dordogne is home to Modern Nomads. The site was created in 2020 by an ambitious young couple who made a life-changing decision to leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and relocate to the stunning, natural, and welcoming countryside. The owners have mastered the ability to create the perfect glamping home-away-from-home experience; they speak 7 languages and have extensive training in the local region to be best placed to offer walking tours and help you plan the best vacation ever. Not only is this stunning glamping site situated in an ideal location for exploring the local areas — only three miles from the world-famous Lascaux Caves, and an equal distance between Sarlat, Perigueux, and Brive — Modern Nomads boasts five beautiful wood and canvas lodges, complementing the natural beauty of the forested land through bright airy rooms decorated with a charming wooden effect which provide a cosy, comfy, exclusive getaway for couples and families alike. Modern Nomads ticks all the boxes for those looking to envelope themselves in the French countryside. You can spend your evenings gazing up at the starlit sky from your lodge with its own private terrace, swinging hammock, and telescope. Or you can relax with the site's alpacas, as your hosts introduce you to these smart animals, and even let you enjoy a spot of yoga with them (we assume they won't be doing the exercises, though). You can enjoy the captivating walks nearby, and explore the local village attractions such as the populous lively weekly market, a varied array of shops and restaurants, and a vibrant energetic bar that overlooks the lake and houses concerts and special events. It all adds up to an authentic glamping experience that brings you closer to nature without sacrificing comfort and relaxation. Between the glamping lodges, outdoor spaces, and a small farmhouse, it’s easy to create unforgettable moments in an idyllic setting. Celebrate your arrival with champagne, sit back on your private terrace and appreciate the peaceful and alluring view of the countryside greens.

Over the 37-acre site, there are lots of activities to take part in, including the sale of home-grown fresh fruits and vegetables, wine tasting twice a week, and fun games ranging from board games to badminton. Nearby, you can either venture down to the local village, or travel a slight little further afield to explore three medieval towns, all packed with history, arts, and culture. This includes one of the most highly-frequented and attractive towns, Sarlat, along with Thenon, home to the largest tree-climbing forest adventure park in Dordogne — we hope you’re not scared of heights!

Our lodges, made of wood and canvas, are the perfect getaway experience for your next glamping holiday. Cosy and airy, with your own hammock, outdoor seats and table, the lodge also includes its own fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. All lodges are equipped with their own telescope for stargazing, TV and free WiFi. We bring you a traditional breakfast every morning. With just 5 lodges on site, this makes for an exclusive holiday. We have two types of lodges on site that can accommodate from 2 to 4 people. The site includes our small alpaca farm which offers daily visits. With some 15 hectares of land at your disposal, there are also plenty of walks to enjoy! We can also lend you yoga mats, ping pong and badminton equipment and board games. There is a playground and some goats on site too. Modern Nomads was created in 2020 by a young couple who made the life-changing decision of leaving the city life behind and relocating to the countryside. Together, they speak 7 different languages and have followed training courses on the local region so as to be able to guide you and help you plan your vacation.
Nearby attractions
Located in the heart of Périgord Noir, the site is ideally located to explore many of the region’s famous sites and villages. There are fairy-tale castles, prehistoric caves, and numerous hiking trails to enjoy. Take a scroll through the area's local history in the castles Château de Hautefort (+33553505123) and Château et jardins de Losse (+33553508008). Caves such as Grotte de Rouffignac (+33553054171) and Grotte de Tourtoirac (+33553502477) are worth checking out for their geological history and beauty, while we also recommend venturing down to Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, around 15 miles away, and a beautiful village that traces its history as a port town all the way back to the early 19th century. Saint-Amand-de-Coly, also roughly 15 miles away, is another beautiful village and The Abbey is the centrepiece, dating back to the 12th century.

If you fancy something a little more action-packed, then don’t worry as that’s here, too. Call Tree Forest Adventure Course (+33553463506) is the largest tree-climbing adventure park that will provide fun for your whole family, and it’s only two miles from the site. Not only can you climb the trees, but there is also disc golf, playground areas, hiking trails through the forest, zip lines, acrobatic courses, and over 150 games that are perfect for children — including balance work, Tarzan jumps, and pirate net.

Aquarium Périgord Noir (+33553071074), just over 20 miles away, is the largest private freshwater aquarium in Europe, home to over 6,000 animals and exhibits. The Aquarium is in the centre of Univerland Le Bugue, where you can certainly enjoy a family day out. The attractions include The Big Bird — the highest aerial course in Europe — Jungle Golf, and Prehistoric Labyrinth Mirror Maze. If this doesn’t tickle your fancy, why not check out Univerland Journiac, which is just under 20 miles from the site where you can enjoy fun-packed activities including Karting City, VR Galaxy, Laxer City, Axe Throwing, and Aquatic Lagoon Water Park.

Food and drink
On-site, you can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables and go wine tasting. A traditional and local breakfast is included, which will be delivered to your lodge every morning so you can wake up and enjoy a basket full of local flavours.

In Thenon, only a 5-minute drive away, you’ll find a small number of shops and restaurants such the local supermarket Carrefour Contant, The Boulangerie bakery (+33553051184), Bambou Pizzeria (+33553091196), La Petit Gourmand (+33553137541) which offer burgers, steaks, seafood and more. Finally, we recommend heading down to La Guinguette de L’etang (+33553051604) which offers an à la carte menu alongside music concerts creating a warm and friendly atmosphere. This restaurant overlooks the beautiful lake where you can hire paddle or rental boats, go on nice walks around the area, and go fishing.
