Private glamping domes in the south of France, 45 minutes from Toulouse

Peter and Liz first moved to Toulouse in the summer of 2018 and stumbled across the pretty village of Montmaur — narrow roads, quaint stone houses, an old château and hilltop chapel — the following winter. Finding a home where their children could connect with nature was the couple’s main priority. But fortunately the kiddy bliss of freedom, space and sunshine are equally appealing to holidaymakers heading south for summer.

On the northern edge of the village, a 45-minute drive from Toulouse, Nature’s Pace is an aptly named smallholding where you can’t help but take a step back from the everyday rush and soak, slowly, into the surroundings. Spectacular views over the Lauragais countryside certainly help, as does the smattering of hammocks, sun loungers and quiet picnic spots that Liz and Peter have conscientiously scattered around the site. Throw in a beautiful swimming pool, sheltered in a sun trap by hedges and a small willow tree, and you can see why the couple chose to settle here.

Nature’s Pace is home to a handful of gîtes and just two glamping dome tents in total, kitted out with real beds, sofas and soft furnishings. A transparent panel in the ceiling lets you admire the stars that this rural part of France affords, while each tent also has its own private bathroom and a kitchen alongside. A small shop stocks some of the best local produce; French cheese, regional wine and olive oil from a local farm. In fact, food was one of the main things that drew Liz and Peter to this area of France. Having first bonded over their love of food in London and then run a country pub in Berkshire, “France was the obvious next step in our foodie journey”, Liz merrily tells us. They’ve particularly embraced the most local dish, cassoulet. “We’ve even incorporated it into our Christmas — goose for Christmas Day and cassoulet made with the leftovers to see us through to the New Year!”

It takes less than 20 minutes to drive to the local town of Castelnaudary, the historic home of cassoulet and appropriately stocked with good restaurants. On the banks of the Canal du Midi, it’s also a great place to go for a waterside walk or cycle, while boats are available to hire if you want to get on the water. Local lakes – Lac de La Ganguise, Lac de la Thesaque, Lac de Saint-Ferréol – are better still for aquatic activities, including canoeing, swimming and wind-surfing, while Peter and Liz are more than happy to offer advice on local walks or where to hire bikes for a leisurely ride in the sun. Days out in Toulouse, Carcassonne and on the Mediterranean coast are all eminently achievable, of course, but you might just find, when nature's pace takes over, that chilling by the pool is all you want to do.

The two tents are situated in our wild meadow with amazing views of the countryside and wildlife. They offer both privacy and a sense of closeness to nature. From inside or outside you can enjoy the view and feel connected.

Each tent has plenty of space with two bedrooms and a separate sitting / dining area inside. There is plenty of space for all the family in the two bedrooms, one furnished with a king sized bed, the other with bunk or twin beds, all made up with organic cotton linens, both feature blackout curtains for a great night’s sleep. There is a wooden floor through the tent.

Meals can be enjoyed together inside and outside. The dining table and seating area with a comfortable sofa and chairs that look out over the fields through the panoramic windows. Alternatively each tent has a private terrace and separate shaded sails so there is plenty of space to relax, eat and drink outside or inside.

Your tent is a short step to a private, ‘en-suite’ shower room and toilet which are fitted out to a high standard including underfloor heating  for that extra comfort in the cooler months.

Within the same wooden building is the private kitchen which is your own to create wonderful meals inspired by the fabulous local markets and artisan producers. It is fully equipped with a combi microwave oven, gas hob, coffee machine and fridge. We have tried to give you everything you need for that luxury camping feeling and to make the most of our fabulous local food heritage.

The tents boast a lovely wooden deck surrounded by the wild flower meadow, the perfect environment to sit, relax and enjoy the views.

We have tried to make the tents as sustainable as we can including the construction of the building for the shower room and kitchens with sustainable building techniques and locally sourced materials and products.

The tents are completely separate from the other facilities and gites we have on our site. The can be booked in combination so the family can camp and the grandparent an have a gite. The tents also have access to all the facilities such as the heated pool, games area and small shop.

Couples, families and quiet groups all welcome. Pets are not permitted. Not suitable for hen and stag parties, though other parties may be possible by prior arrangement.

We are located in the small village of Montmaur in Aude, just over the border with the Haute-Garonne.

Our gites provide a great location for a rural escape from hectic lives without having to spend hours in the car to reach us.  Only 45 minutes from both Toulouse and Carcassonne airports and accessible from both the A61 motorway and the main railway line between Toulouse and the Mediterranean. The cycle path ‘La Rigole du canal du Midi’ stretching from the Canal du Midi to Revel and on to Lac St Ferreol lies on the other side of the village if you are travelling by bike or by boat.

We have very good road links with the A61 motorway only 15 minutes away that. We are a great base to explore the Lauragaise and beyond:

Explore Cathar castles

Experience Carcassonne.

A day out in Toulouse

Sample the local markets such as Revel and come back to cook the perfect supper

Cycle and walk through the  undulating surrounding countryside

Take a tour of an organic vineyard

Hire a bike and cycle to Castelnaudary along the Canal du Midi and try the real Cassoulet

Food & Drink

Nature’s Pace has a small shop selling essential items and local produce, including wine, beer, jam and olive oil. The famous dish of the area is cassoulet, with its origins claimed by the nearest town, Castelnaudary (15 minutes by car). There are plenty of restaurants in Castelnaudary in which to try it (or buy a ready-made version) or discover an excellent local variation at Relais de Riquet (+33 4 68 60 16 87), on the Canal du Midi. Le Pas de Narouze (+33 4 68 23 31 15) is also on the Canal du Midi (by the Bassin de Naurouze) offering very reasonably priced set menus and modern French food. A little closer to home (a 10-minute drive), the pretty village of Saint-Félix-Lauragais has both a Michelin Guide-recommended spot – L’ Auberge du Poids Public (+33 5 62 18 85 00) – with fabulous views across the Pleine de Lauragais and outstanding food, as well as the more informal, Le Cocagne (+33 6 42 03 94 75), on the village square. For a family meal, try the restaurant at Lac d’Enclas, with easy parking, a lovely walk around the lake by the restaurant and a children’s playground.
