Quiet and romantic glamping for grown-ups with campfires in a rural meadow in Central France

France has a reputation for romance and while some might say the best place to find it is at the top of the Eiffel Tower, we’re pointing glamping fans in the direction of La Prairie Étoilée. Situated, rather appropriately, in the heart of the country, this bell tent glamping site has a name that means Starry Meadow. And as well as campfires under the stars, you can have breakfasts in bed, hire tandem bikes to ride around rural lanes and enjoy the French tradition of chef-cooked table d’hote dinners on site. Camping doesn’t get much more romantic than this.

If that all sounds rather grown-up, it’s because La Prairie Étoilée is peacefully adults only. It’s camping for couples and everything is designed for people in pairs. There are three lotus belle tents, each comfortably furnished with the bulbous design ensuring enough space for a kingsized bed among its thoughtfully-chosen furniture. Outside, each tent has a mown garden area with a fire pit, and bamboo-protected cooking and dining area, that’s perfect for candlelit dinners.

But when cooking for yourself doesn’t appeal, you can wander through the wildflowers to the dining barn where a four-course dinner will be cooked for you by one half of the British couple behind this place, Simon — a trained chef. He and his wife, Nadine, can also provide picnic hampers for days out and tips for their favourite authentic French eateries in the surrounding villages and towns.

This is Indre in central France where, as Nadine and Simon put it: “the paths are less trodden”. You can easily spend your days here enjoying simple pleasures; walking around the local village of Crozon-sur-Vauvre, browsing the fresh produce at La Chatre market or pootling along country lanes on those bikes made for two. The pretty villages of the Creuse Valley and the Brenne Regional Natural Park are a little further but worth the pleasant drive. Should you want more excitement, you can find it with watersports and wild swimming at a nearby lake or bungee jumping at the Cluis Viaduct. For many, though, the thought of relaxing in a starry meadow, enjoying great food and reading a good book undisturbed will be exciting enough.

Within a pretty tree-lined wildflower meadow, with just fields all around, you will find three beautifully appointed, luxury, Lotus Belle tents.  One of the tents has clear panels in the roof, so it really is like sleeping under the stars!  At 5m diameter, the tents are really spacious and just for two.  Each has a sumptuous king sized bed, sofa and everything you need for comfortable stay in nature.

There is lots of distance between the tents and each has a large, mown outside space to relax in.  This includes its own fire pit, outside seating area and a bamboo gazebo, housing a camp kitchen and dining area.

The camp kitchens are well equipped, each with gas hob, cool box (free exchangeable ice packs), right through to champagne flutes.  There is a new purpose built bathhouse which houses three shower rooms, spotlessly clean eco toilets and washing up areas.  Each tent has its own, so no queues in the morning for shared facilities!

On site, in a garden area, away from the tents, is a small plunge pool with sunbeds and parasols - perfect for cooling off and chilling out.

Facilities also include a licensed Dining Barn for sociable evenings, chatting at a large table, over great food and good wine.  Picnics, barbecue packs and ingredients for campfire classics are also available to order.

Extra logs, charcoal, basic provisions and drinks are available to purchase on site.

Simon and Nadine are sociable hosts that live on site but respect guests' privacy.  They are on hand for any questions you may have and are more than happy to offer advice on what to see, do and places to eat; all those little hidden gems!

Suitable For

Glamping Only.  La Prairie Étoilée is a tranquil retreat, exclusively for couples.  Sorry, children, groups and pets are not allowed.

There's lots of opportunity for car free days with walks and cycle routes right on the doorstep. Whether on foot or by peddle power, you will  pass through undulating countryside, past ancient hedgerows, a monumental tree (steeped in folklore) and the enchanting Château de Lalande.  Crozon-Sur-Vauvre boasts 3 lovely treasure trail walks - maps are available and the routes have colour coded signposts, so you can’t get lost (unless you want to!)

Why walk alone? There's a donkey sanctuary in the village where you can take donkeys on hikes - or do they take you? They are so smart and characterful.

The Parc Des Parelles, less than 15 minutes away by car, is sited in an old slate quarry and is now a very picturesque woodland area, with boardwalks and picnic spots.

Adventure isn't far away either.  Within a 15 minute drive, you could be learning to waterski or wakeboard at Sensas’ Parc 36, a state of the art teleski (water skiing without a boat) centre with a swimming lake, cafe and walks.  And 15 minutes in the opposite direction, you can bungee jump off the Cluis Viaduct.  You could but would you?

Being situated in the southern realms of the ancient province of Berry and close to the departmental border, La Prairie Étoilée is perfectly placed for exploring the beautiful Indre and La Creuse.  In the stunning Creuse Valley, you will discover lakes and rivers for wild swimming, kayaking and fishing, colourful towns and some of the most beautiful villages in France (and that's official!).  You can even walk in Monet's footsteps! See where some of the greatest Impressionist artists came to paint and you will understand why!

Visit chateaux, ancient fresco-painted churches and world heritage sites.  Have a day trip to the land of 3000 lakes with its many bird species and wildlife galore; Brenne Regional Natural Park.  And in the summer months, small sleepy villages come alive for their annual brocantes (flea markets), fêtes and night food markets (social occasions where you effectively buy your picnic from the market and then everyone dines at tables in the street).   But don't worry, there are lots of food markets and brocante shops to explore all year round.  Whatever the season, you can to seek out something unique and very French, whether that be to eat or treasure!

Food & Drink

In the surrounding towns there are plenty of restaurants (10 of which are in the Michelin Guide - all within 20 to 60 minutes drive away) and lots of other authentic little eateries dotted around in the local villages.

There is one Michelin starred restaurant in L'Indre within, what must be, the most romantic village in France - Saint-Valentin.  It's the restaurant Le Février 14; where every day is Valentine's day.

For self catering provisions the nearest bakery, butchers and general store is at Crevant, just 6 minutes by car.

Aigurande is the nearest town around 7km away with two supermarkets (both stock some local produce), pharmacy, a bar, pizzeria etc and on Friday mornings, a vibrant market.

La Chatre, with its medieval roots, is the next, bigger town  - approximately 20km away, with a wider choice of supermarkets and other shops, bars and restaurants. There’s also a fabulous market on Saturday mornings with many more local organic producers.

And of course, if you feel like staying put, there are all the various on site dining options!

The Owner Says

La Prairie Étoilée is a magical, get-away-from-it all glamping experience, exclusively for couples, deep in the heart of rural France; where paths are less trodden. Here you will find a warm welcome and the perfect blend of luxury, tranquillity and authentic outdoor experiences. With just three tents and a maximum of six guests on site, this is an exclusive yet friendly glampsite, where you can toast marshmallows around your own roaring campfire, sleep beneath canvas in a sumptuous bed and totally relax under a big starry sky.

La Prairie Étoilée is built on slow, sustainable tourism and sound ecological principles.  We partner with local businesses to bring authentic, local experiences to our guests; so if you want to walk with Grand Noir du Berry donkeys, bake bread with local organic flour, or visit the snail farm, you can!  We have tandems to hire for a fun, low impact way to explore the area and maps & walking routes a-plenty.

The kitchen and bathroom structures are built from reclaimed and locally sourced materials - and yes - even the bamboo (harvested an hour away)!  The bathhouse has composting toilets and water saving showers.  You will find recycling & compost bins and drinking bottles (to reduce single use plastics).  All lighting, in the tents and around the site, is solar powered.

Are you foodies? This area is just bursting with local produce from beef to green lentils and the most delicious goats cheeses to great wines.  We make indulging in all the local delicacies easy for you.  You can dine at the on site, licensed table d'hôtes (Simon is a Chef) or order barbecue packs & ingredients to cook yourself.   And then there's breakfast.  Order a delicious breakfast basket to be delivered to your tent.  Make your selection from our menu of local and organic produce and it will be their waiting for you when ever you are ready!

We (Simon and Nadine) left behind busy lives in the UK to create La Prairie Étoilée; a total escape for busy people to come to unplug, recharge and reconnect with nature, themselves and each other; it's been a labour of love!  Time away in nature always brought us back together.  And isn't there something inherently romantic about sleeping under canvas? La Prairie Étoilée is the place to find out!
