A lovely farm with lambs, Filly the horse, chickens, and a herd of cattle grazing in the field

Clamber about on hay bales, feed lambs and collect eggs from the chicken coop... such is life at College Farm – and not just for the farmer. These daily delights come as standard when you’re staying in one of the site’s safari tents. It’s a getaway with a little taste of life on the farm. The location on the Norfolk-Suffolk border and the top-notch accommodation under canvas appeal to lots of people. But there’s no denying that it’ll be little farm hands who’ll love it here the most.

College Farm is part of the Feather Down network of farm stays which all offer off-grid holidays in roomy safari tents (or ‘tented cottages’ as the Feather Down team likes to call them). Lit only by candles and oil lamps, the rustic but homely accommodation is provided by Feather Down and invariably lovely with log burners, en suite loos and cute kids’ cupboard bedrooms as particular highlights. And while the well-set up accommodation doesn't vary much, the on-site experience is as unique as the farms you’ll find it on, with hosting left in the capable hands of the farmers.

Here, that’s Marcus and Lucy whose warm welcome is a constant in the glowing reviews this place attracts. They’ll show you around the site that's home to eight of Feather Down’s tents, all facing fields grazed by the College Farm cows. The smaller, fluffier animals, the lambs and chickens, are even closer in an enclosure at the top of the glamping field, so you can visit them when you want. There’s also an honesty shop for supplies, a swing, a slide, a trampoline and the legendary Hay Play Barn where kids can tumble about among the bales.

If you can drag them away for a day out there’s plenty for them to do with more clambering about at Bewilderwood and dino-fun at theme park, Roarr! But it’s not just little kids who are well entertained in this part of the world. The Broads, the beaches and the wildlife which East Anglia is famous for are all within easy reach.

Nearby

The site is on the southern tip of The Broads which is, of course, a great place for all sorts of water-based activities such as boat, canoe or paddleboard hire. The village of Beccles, six miles from site, offers place to get on the water (try The Canoe Man) and in it at the popular Beccles Lido (01502 713297). There is an abundance of well-known coastal spots to suit all tastes from Horsey Gap which is great for seal watching to Aldeburgh which is perfect for a spot of shopping and an ice cream shingley shores (both are around 30 miles from site). Popular Southwold Pier is 18 away and the less well-known Gorleston is a lesser-known but lovely spot for a day on the beach, 12 miles from site. The charming city of Norwich, 20 miles from site, has a network of medieval lanes to explore, and more medieval parish churches than any other northern Europe city, as well as two cathedrals and a Norman castle. For kids there's Bewilderwood (01692 633033), the tree-house adventure park, Africa Alive (01502 740291) and Roarr! dinosaur park all within 40 miles of site.

Food & Drink

The on-site honesty shop sells basic supplies and there's a barbecue pack available to pre-order (host Lucy contacts guests directly to offer this). The site also has a pizza oven. There are lots of farm shops in the surrounding villages including Maisebrook Farm Shop (01502 711018), about eight miles from site. Ask Lucy and Marcus for further recommendations.

The Owner Says

College Farm has the perfect glamping Norfolk/Suffolk border location on the southerly tip of The Norfolk Broads.  It’s just a half-hour's drive to the well-known coastal towns of Southwold, Walberswick and Aldeburgh, and equally close by are the amazing Bewilderwood, Roar dinosaur park and Africa Alive.

There are plenty of activities for children and they are all located at the top of the campsite field so children can play independently whilst not being far from their parents. There's a lamb enclosure and a big chicken coop  which are always open for interaction with the animals, and over the Easter period the lambs can be bottle fed.  The hay play barn is a paradise for energetic children (and parents!) with bale jumping, tunnelling and scope for endless imaginary games.  There is a trampoline too, next to the slide and swings.  The signed walk down to the river is a lovely way of getting a clearer picture of the farm, seeing our herd of mixed beef cows grazing the marshes and spotting some of our great wildlife here.

We love getting to know all our guests, and want each to have a Feather Down experience they will remember for a lifetime.
