Family-friendly bell tent glamping with wood burners and campfires, within walking distance of Felbrigg Hall

A beach, a steam train, a big country house, an old flint church… ask anyone to list the holiday sights of North Norfolk and, chances are, they’ll mention everything within two miles of Gresham Hall Glamping. The new bell tent location, tucked away in the village of Aylmerton, over the hedge from the village pond, has a seriously convenient location. It somehow manages the feat of being five minutes drive from the beach and five minutes walk from the National Trust’s Felbrigg Hall, yet still eschews the holiday crowds. It’s also remarkably comfortable, which surely seals the deal.

There are just seven bell tents in the meadow, each comfortably sleeping a family of four, with grown-ups in a proper double bed and room for children on air mattresses to the side. Almost everything you need is provided. There’s a box of crockery, cutlery, and utensils, and a picnic table and firepit outside. Heating comes in the form of a toasty wood-burning stove, which adds a lovely atmosphere on cooler evenings, and there’s also an electric blanket for the double bed.

As cosy as each bell tent seems, you’ll likely spend more time outside. There’s ample space to play in the meadow, with views of the round-towered church in the background and the hot showers and loos at one end of the field. A track, a matter of yards from the meadow entrance, traces the short walk to the Felbrigg Estate, a fabulous place for family picnics overlooking the sheep- and cattle-dotted parkland, and the local roads are quiet enough for cycling – head south through Gresham past the church and the hall from which the glampsite takes its name. If it weren’t for the steep hill back up we’d suggest cycling the 10 minutes to the beach in West Runton too (more like 20 minutes on the way back), with sands that run to Sheringham in the east and Cromer in the west, just a small taste of the miles of coastline within easy reach.

Lovely little find, great location
We had a lovely stay and received a warm welcome from Georgy upon our arrival. Everything on the site and in the tent is well maintained and everything has been thought of, to make your stay more enjoyable. The site is less than 10 mins drive to both Sheringham and Cromer, which are lovely days out. We haven’t been glamping before but wouldn’t hesitate to go again, and will probably return here in the future.

The facilities were very clean, modern and outstanding. The tent was furnished and equipped to a high standard and faultless. The area was nice next to a field. We would have liked to thanked and let the owners know how lovely our stay has been in person but unfortunately we didn't get to meet them. We hope to return one day.

The tents themselves are nicely turned out and well equipped. However the location is not that great, close to a road and overlooked by properties backing onto the field. The shower and toilet facilities are very nice and clean and overall position located to Cromer is good. The hosts were nice and well managed.

It is clearly a brand new set up, but mostly in a good way! The tent was very clean and cosy, with a little wood burner, fairy lights (inside and out), electric blankets and hot water bottles for the kids (which they loved!). All beds were very comfortable. It was brilliant to have a kettle and mini cool box too. The toilet and shower huts were always pleasant. The surprise pizza night was a great treat, the owners were very friendly and accommodating. We would definitely return, would love to see how it progresses, maybe a small wooden play area for children? Thank you for having us!

A nice small site with well equipped tents, everything you need is there. Electric blankets and hot water bottles a nice touch as were the kettles in the tent. Great location in terms of exploring the area. When the sun shines it’s really lovely. We had a few issues which did effect our stay sadly, but as a new opening we understand these things happen and to be fair these were addressed and sorted as soon as they could. It’s refreshing to see the owners have taken our feedback on board.

Nearby attractions

It's just half a mile to the back gate of the National Trust's Felbrigg Hall estate (01263 837444), with plenty more walking to do when you get there. Follow the footpath down and round the lake (look out for the hollow tree you can crawl inside on the way) or the driveway in front of the house and to the courtyard café. The more recently restored walled garden is also well worth exploring. Sheringham Park (01263 820550), three miles away, likes to compete in the country estate stakes, with woodland trails to wander and excellent views over the sea. For beaches, head to Sheringham or Cromer, both around three miles. The reality along this stretch of Norfolk coast is that it's really all one continuous beach, just with different towns and villages backing on to it, so you can take your pick of access points. A particularly good option, however, is to head to Cromer and walk along the beach to Overstrand, returning via the clifftop path that takes in the colourful gorse beside the golf course and fantastic views of Cromer Pier. Then grab fish and chips in Cromer or at the little cafe in Overstrand halfway. Miles more of the coastline is within easy reach by car, with the likes of Cley next to the Sea and its nature reserve, the endless pebble beach at Salthouse, and the picturesque harbours of Morston and Blakeney all within a half-hour drive of Gresham Hall Glamping.

Food and drink

The nearest pub is the Roman Camp Inn (01263 838291), half a mile away, but for fine food it's worth heading a little further, with ample options in Cromer (three miles) and Sheringham (four miles) as well as along the A148 in the foodie market town of Holt (eight miles), where Byfords (01263 711400) is a particularly good place to stop. Pick of the pubs includes The Gunton Arms (01263 832010), where game is roasted on an open fire in the middle of the dining room (book well in advance if you're dining), the Bucks Arms (01263 732133) on the National Trust's Blickling Estate and the Saracen's Head (01263 768909) in Wolterton. If you want one by the coast, try The Dun Cow (01263 740870), overlooking the marsh in Salthouse (or grab fish and chips in Cromer and eat it on the pier).
