A quirky and vintage-styled shepherd's hut on a farm near the Yorkshire Dales

The name says it all with Ali’s Little Woodland Wonder; its charming shepherd's hut — outfitted with vintage furnishings and retro touches exemplifying hosts Alison and Andrew’s love of all things old-school — is certainly little, while its woodland setting in reach of the Yorkshire Dales is certainly wondrous. This is a labour of love from a couple who want to share their scenic spot with guests, providing cosy accommodation tucked away within 12 acres of woodland you get all to yourselves, itself within a 270-acre family-run working farm.

This Little Woodland Wonder presents the kind of laid-back approach that you can only get from an off-grid holiday — although a heated, gas-powered shower, camp kitchen, and compost loo all to yourself certainly make it more comfortable than other stripped-back sites. Alison affirms that guests can enjoy themselves as they wish within these acres — if you want to go chop your own wood within this sprawling land, go right ahead, she says — and if your party is larger than the couples the hut accommodates, discuss that with your hosts before arrival and they’ll let them pull up in a caravan, campervan, or tent for an extra fee. Children are also welcome, you could sleep an extra 'little one' free of charge but please bring your own airbed and bedding and arrange this prior to arrival. Furry friends are allowed, though it’s asked that you keep any kiddies and your dog supervised given the open pond and the cows in the farmland.

However, the likelihood is that you’re looking for the solitude this shepherd's hut in acres of private wood presents, and as such, this is ideally suited for romantic getaways. Enjoy the wildlife that gathers around the site — owls, deer, and foxes are your companions during your stay — the dragonflies, ducks, and newts that call its newly created pond their home, and take a walk along the several footpaths that run through the land. Venture a little further out and you can take on the Three Peaks Challenge, a beautiful (though lengthy — make sure you come well-prepared) adventure to the Dales’ peaks offering stunning views of your surroundings. For cyclists, bring your bike (or hire one there) and cycle through Gisburn Forest, with routes for both novice and expert mountain bikers. If you’re looking for the ideal hub from which to explore Yorkshire, it’s a (Little Woodland) wonder you haven’t booked yet.

Facilities

The woodland wonder includes everything you will need for your stay. The shepherds hut itself has a double bed, retro kitchenette, wood burning stove, and comfy chairs. We also have a camp kitchen with a sink which has hot and cold running water and a gas stove for cooking, crockery and cooking utensils are all provided. There is waterless compost toilet, and a gas heated shower hut. As we are off grid all lighting on the site is solar powered, but there are no plug sockets so it may be advisable to bring a power bank for phone charging etc. There is no wifi on site but internet coverage works well on most networks. Bedding is all included but guests are asked to bring their own towels. As this is a rural location, in cold wintery conditions the water supply can freeze up! If this occurs the shower won't work but we can still provide drinking water. The site is about 0.2 miles along the farm track which is maintained but isn't full tarmaced, even so access is completely possible in all cars. Please be aware that during the summer months it is a possibility that you may hear farm machinery working late at night as we are harvesting the grass for the cattle to eat in the winter months. For complete transparency we must make our guests aware that although the site is in its own corner of the wood, there will be daily traffic coming past on the farm track, i.e postman, 4x4s, milk collection etc.

Suitable For

We allow one well behaved dog which must be kept on a lead outside the woodland, guests must remember this is a working farm, livestock are in all fields for most of the year. All ages are welcome but anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The pond in the wood is unfenced so children need to be supervised at all times. The shepherds hut sleeps two but we could accommodate larger parties by prior arrangement, this could be a camper van, caravan or a tent. A small fee would be applicable.

Nearby

We are in a great location for walking in the Yorkshire Dales. Our site is a perfect base for completing the Yorkshire three peaks and we are also only 5 miles to Gisburn forest which has lots of walking and cycling trails. There are also plenty of local footpaths nearby. The market town of Settle is 4 miles away and has lots of lovely places to eat and some local shops. The closest train station is Long Preston which is 2.5 miles away which has good links to Skipton, Leeds and Carlisle. There is the famous Settle to Carlisle railway that takes you on a beautiful journey over the Ribblehead viaduct. If necessary, by prior arrangement we can collect guests from Long Preston train station. The Lake District is an hours drive away.

We have used our love of nature to create a holiday experience for anyone to enjoy. We have a newly created pond on site which is a wildlife haven, that is already attracting dragonflies, newts, toads, frogs and ducks. Alison and Andrew the owners of the site have a love of all things vintage, retro, wacky and wonderful which is reflected throughout.
