The ancient medieval town of Sandwich is about four miles down the road with historic Deal, six miles in the other direction. Both are worth a look for their independent shops, eateries, timbered buildings and small museums. Sandwich sits on the River Stour and there are boat trips available with the Sandwich River Bus (07958 376183) either out into the estuary where there’s a good chance of spotting seals or inland to Richborough Roman Fort (01304 612013). At Deal, you can visit Deal Castle (01304 372762), go crabbing off the pier and enjoy the long shingle beach. Further along the coast there are two more castles Walmer (01304 364288) and the mighty Dover Castle (0370 3331181) atop the famous white cliffs. Closer to site, you can walk to the beach at Sandwich Bay in about 40 minutes or head in up the coast for beaches and seaside fun at Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Margate. For something more active, head to one of the area’s many well-known golf courses or for the bike trails at Betteshanger Park (01304 619227), three miles from site. Howletts and Wingham Wildlife Parks are both about ten miles from site and Canterbury is only 15 miles away.

Food & Drink

With a private chef and butler service, there’s really no need to leave the site – unless you want to. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon tea are all available served in the shared dining barn or to you at your tent or shepherd’s hut. If you want a change of scenery, it’s just a short walk, across the field, to The Blazing Donkey, a small country house hotel with a bar, restaurant, open fires, a garden and a welcoming atmosphere.

Getting There

From the A2, take the exit for Womenswold, Snowdon, Adisham and Nonington, a few miles south of Canterbury. At the roundabout immediately after the slip road, take the first exit on to the B2046 and then the first right shortly afterwards on to Holt Street. Follow this for about five miles until you see a right turn signposted for Eastry, called Heronden Lane. Take this road all the way in to Eastry, until you reach a T junction with Eastry High Street. Turn right and then take an almost immediate left, following signs to The Blazing Donkey. Follow these all the way to the car park for the Blazing Donkey, which is shared with Ham Hideaway.

There’s a railway station at Sandwich, three miles away. From there you can take a taxi - or call the butler.
