An exclusive-hire site with a yurt and a shepherd's hut on a smallholding in the Sussex countryside

Call your friends, book Reaching Views, and get ready for a weekend in the countryside. This is a place where conversation takes place around the campfire, walks end at the local pub, and dinner is served in the dappled shade of an apple tree. It’s an exclusive-hire glamping site with one yurt and one shepherd’s hut hired together; a great place for two families, two couples, or a small group of friends to get together and enjoy the great outdoors.

This is the West Sussex countryside, and the reaching views from Blakes Farm are of the rolling hills and farmland of the South Downs National Park. The foreground is grassy paddocks grazed by the alpacas, sheep, and goats of the eight-acre smallholding this glamping site has been set up on. It’s the work of Krystyna and Bruce who also hire out vintage VW campers, in a separate but related business. They’ll welcome you to Blake’s Farm and show you your home for the weekend: a paddock with a cluster of tiny structures that will provide everything you need.

There’s a little canvas yurt sleeping up to four, a shepherd’s hut with room enough for three, and the shared areas: a roundhouse with an eco loo, an outdoor shower, and a covered communal kitchen. There’s also a fire pit, barbecue, and outdoor seating all designed for sociable, alfresco living where you only have to share facilities with friends and can enjoy comfortably private sleeping quarters that have been decked out in style.

Within 15 minutes, you can walk to the banks of the River Adur where wild swimming and kayaking are popular in summer. It takes the same time to walk along the road to the lovely Sussex pub, The Fountain, recommended by your hosts and just about everyone who’s visited (including Laurence Olivier, who used to be a local). But why race along the road when you can meander through fields and along the river, building up an appetite as you go? There are plenty of places to visit within an hour of the site — country estates, the beaches of the south coast, and bustling Brighton among them — but it’s the simple pleasures here that we like the most; slowing down, catching up with friends, and enjoying the far-reaching views.

Reaching Views has everything you need to recharge and relax. An indoor shower / toilet block with heating for those chillier nights plus an outdoor heated shower for those warmers days. A  Wee Hooses eco toilet, glass hand basin games and books in the round house. A well equipped undercover kitchen with a small fridge. Mains electricity in all buildings. Bedding and towels supplied for the double bed in the yurt and shepherd hut. Single beds - bring your own please or hire out our sleeping bags. Extra blankets available. A wood burning stove in the shepherd hut with kettle for hot drinks.
Outdoor cooking on the dual BBQ / firepit and campfire by the large bench, marshmallows allowed!
Local estate hardwood available for the campfire and firepit. BBQ packs supplied (using a local butcher for 4 or 7 people) at an extra cost. The complex has fencing to stop our animals from saying a "close hello" and to ensure your dogs cannot escape too.

Suitable For

The site is suited to all, especially extended families, good friends, gentle hens and of course animal lovers.

There are plenty of options for walking with the local pub  a 15-minute walk away and plenty of footpaths and bridleways in the area. Within half an hour, you can be on the beach at Littlehampton, or visiting Bolney Wine Estates (8 miles away; 01444 881 575), Arundel Castle (14 miles; 01903 882173), Cowdray Park and Polo fields (18 miles; 01730 813257), Parham House and Gardens (7 miles; 01903 742021) or Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (10 miles; 0871 8733 389). Food & Drink

Less than 15 minutes' walk takes you to the local village pub, The Fountain (01403 710219) at Ashurst, which used to be Lawrence Olivier's local and comes recommended by your hosts too. Alternatively, take a drive to The Ginger Fox (01273 857888) at Henfield, 8 miles from site, or The White Horse (01903 814084) at Steyning, about 3 miles away. For barbecue provisions, order a BBQ box direct with us or go to Jeremy's Two in Cowfold, 5 miles from site. Thoughtfully designed accommodation in a fantastic setting - highly recommended.

My wife and I shared ‘Reaching Views’ with close friends and their teenage son. We loved the designs of the yurt, shepherd’s hut and accompanying kitchen, dining and seating areas. The smallholding is beautifully maintained and it was a real pleasure to meet and watch the animals; pygmy goats, alpacas, geese, guinea fowl and Krystyna and Bruce’s fabulous friendly dogs. The views were amazing and we enjoyed sunsets around the bbq fire, with a glass in hand. The locally-sourced meat was delicious. The Fountain is a great local pub with good food and there is lots to do and visit in easy reach.
