Features & Facilities
Every care and thought for guests has been put into each of the 3 yurts and 2 bell tents. They come with everything but the kitchen sink. Campfires are allowed in fire pits (1 for each abode, as well as a BBQ and picnic table). Plans are afoot to erect another yurt further down the valley, with its own eco-shower and compost loo to keep it self-contained, so watch this space. If you’re staying in the bell tents, which are furthest from the farm, it’s a bit of a trek to the facilities. Marked walks take you around the farm’s many acres, including down to the river at the valley floor for a splash or stone skim. Maps of the farm’s boundaries are available from the communal barn.
The vast and sandy beach at Bude (check the tide times) is a 40-minute drive away. Test yourself on the waves courtesy of Bude Surfing Experience (07779117746) at nearby Summerleaze beach. All ages and abilities are welcome and other activities such as caving, climbing, kayaking and mountain biking can be arranged). Closer to home there’s the riverside walk at Fingle Bridge; and for a spot of history head to Castle Drogo (01647 433306) in Drewsteignton.
Food & Drink
You’re on an organic farm so take advantage of the delicious home-grown produce and that of the local area by pre-ordering one of the Hampers for Campers. The ‘honesty’ larder and fridge in the kitchen is stocked with organic fruit bags and veg boxes, meat, eggs, and local juices and ciders. If you want to eat out, The Mulberry (01647 24227) lies 4 miles away in Cheriton Bishop and serves excellent if pricey meals.
From M5 get onto A30 in direction of Okehampton. Exit A30 at Woodleigh Junction/ Cheriton Bishop. Go into Cheriton Bishop – about half way along the main street take the right hand turn just before the shop, with a brown signpost to Northdown Farm. Carry on along that road (Ignore the left hand turn at the cross roads to Hittisleigh and go straight across them). After about 2½ miles you will come across a very small, sudden left hand mini cross roads called 'Three Gate'. Turn left towards Binneford. Follow that road all the way to Binneford Cross (about 1½ miles). Just before Binneford cross you will come to a ford where the road forks – cross the ford and go right up the hill. At Binneford cross (which is signposted) turn left, and carry on up that road for a few minutes. You will see the farm on the left with a blue sign marked 'Summerhill Farm'.
