Luxury farm stays in on a rural Devonshire farm that's still surprisingly easy to get to

The cream teas, glorious countryside, wild moorlands and varied coastline of Devon make it an attractive prospect for a holiday. But, for many of us, it seems so very far away. It’s surely too distant for a weekend away – or is it? We’ve found a place that’s blissfully rural and deeply Devonshire, just 10 minutes off the M5 or a two-hour train ride from London. It’s close enough to enable visits to the sandy beaches of the south coast and the wilder ones of the north and almost equidistant between Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks. This place is Billingsmoor Farm in the rolling countryside of the Prince of Wales’ Duchy of Cornwall Estate.

Billingsmoor is a Feather Down farm; part of a network of farm stays offering off-grid holidays in roomy safari tents (or ‘tented cottages’ as the Feather Down team likes to call them). Lit only by candles and oil lamps, the rustic but homely accommodation is provided by Feather Down and invariably lovely with log burners, en-suite loos and cute kids’ cupboard bedrooms as particular highlights. And while the well-set up accommodation varies little, the on-site experience is as unique as the farms you’ll find it on, with hosting left in the capable hands of Feather Down’s partner farmers.

At Billingsmoor, it’s Robert and Jayne who run the place, which is, first and foremost, a 400-acre organic dairy farm. In addition to the cows you’ll see in the fields, there’s a paddock with friendly kune kune pigs, sheep and chickens that you’ll have the chance to meet. Tents here, there are five, are tucked on the edge of the farm’s woodland, which you’re welcome to explore. There’s also a pizza oven and honesty shop with the opportunity to pre-book fresh seasonal produce or even home-cooked meals which you can warm on your log burning stove.

If you’re here for the weekend, life on the farm and a local day out will give you plenty to do. A canal cruise by horse-drawn barge or a family competition on The Bear Trail assault course, are popular things nearby. But, well-located Billingsmoor offers more if you want it. It’s a 30-minute drive to the beach at Budleigh Salterton on the south coast or a little further to Dartmoor National Park. Head north and you pass through Exmoor to hit the north coast of Devon in about an hour. At Billingsmoor, you’re slap-bang in the heart of Devon; so near and yet so far.

Each family-sized safari tent has three rooms: a double bedroom, a bunk room and the main living space within which is a cute cupboard bed suitable for younger children. The living space also has a fully equipped kitchen, a wood-burning stove, dining area and a sofa and each tent has a private en-suite, flushing toilet. There is running cold water to both the hand basin and the kitchen sink. Bedding and towels are supplied. Outside each tent there is a sheltered veranda with two deck chairs, a picnic table and outdoor cooking area with a barbecue and a fire pit. Showers are shared and a short walk away. The site also has a pizza oven and a shared undercover seating area.

Suitable For

Glampers, families, couples, dogs (on leads) – yes. Big groups and single-sex groups – by arrangement only. Campers, campervans, motorhomes, caravans – no.

On site, there are Forest School sessions which can be booked in advance (07816 146554) and, nearby, horse riding lessons (07817 322860) are available too. Families tend to enjoy The Bear Trail (01392 881780), a family assault course, just five miles from Billingsmoor Farm, while Tiverton is seven miles from site and worth a visit for its romantic castle (01884 253200) and horse-drawn barge trips on the tranquil Grand Western Canal by the Tiverton Canal Co (01884 253345). Just beyond Tiverton is Knightshayes (01884 254665), a National Trust property with a beautiful garden and parkland. All the walking, wildlife watching, cycling and exploring of Exmoor National Park (01398 323665), is just 20 miles away and, in the other direction, it's only 30 miles to Dartmoor National Park. Exeter is closer still, about 11 miles from Billingsmoor Farm, and offers lots to see and do, including the cathedral and a series of underground passages, which you can explore on a tour. For beaches, Budleigh Salterton and the sandy south Devon coast are about 25 miles from site with the wilder north Devon coast at Minehead a little further – about an hour's drive, but it's a scenic drive, through Exmoor National Park.

Food & Drink

The on-site honesty shop stocks lots of basics and local goodies and there are a whole range of seasonal boxes and hampers available to book in advance (book with the farm directly) as well as a range of ready-cooked meals. If you want to eat out, The Lamb Inn (01382 860272) at Silverton is just two miles from site and The Fisherman's Cot (01884 855237) in Bickleigh (six miles away) is recommended for its pretty riverside setting.

What’s more, the farm is less than 20 miles from the soft sands of Exmouth’s famous family beach and 20 miles from Dartmoor National Park. There is excellent access to Billingsmoor itself, which is a 10-minute drive from the M5. The farm is surrounded by National Trust properties, two of which are within 10 miles.

All of our tents offer panoramic views of the Devon countryside and with a modern heated shower block and a well-stocked pantry, you can be sure of a comfortable stay at Billingsmoor Farm.

This traditional 400-acre family farm is farmed under the Organic Stewardship Scheme, which ensures that it is managed with the environment in mind. Billingsmoor Farm offers a stunning landscape and a wealth of wildlife. Pets are welcome but they must be kept on a lead at all times.

The 200 Friesian cows are milked twice a day and sometimes lucky campers get to see calves being born! Kunekune pigs and pet sheep can be found in the animal paddock. The ‘Old Shippen’ barn is ideal for a range of events, from weddings and celebrations to corporate functions.

The surroundings of this beautiful organic dairy farm encapsulate quintessential Devon. A magical woodland creates a safe and natural backdrop that will provide your children with hours of entertainment, making dens and letting their imaginations run wild in the glorious fresh air. And in the evening what could be better than sitting out, toasting marshmallows on your campfire looking at the night sky.
