Dreamhuts Retreat
UK England South West England Devon Cullompton
It seems fitting that this brand new Devon glamping site, set in the hedge-ribbonned countryside of the Culm Valley, plays host to two thoroughly modern shepherd’s huts. After all, on the edge of the Blackdown Hills AONB, this is traditional sheep farming country through and through. Yet, just as, today, the agriculture has modernised – tractors work the local fields and sheep have been usurped by horses (you can even bring your own on holiday with you!) – these shepherd’s huts are anything but old fashioned.
Each accompanied by its own private hot tub, the huts offer a wealth of space inside, with a king-sized bed at one end and luxurious en-suite bathrooms that feature powerful showers and a beautiful slate-tile finish. There’s under-floor heating throughout, a wall-mounted digital television beside the bed and a classic wood-burning stove, so you can lose yourself staring into the flames on a rainy day. For an extra extravagant touch, both huts also have the shared use of a wood-clad, steamy sauna, shaped like an over-sized barrel with its glass door peeping out across the meadow setting. You can also book in-house 'pamper packages', including massage, facials and manicures.
If don’t have a horse to bring with you (there’s stabling, turnout and guides to show you the best bridleways), then you needn’t worry. The local footpaths weave their way to the nearest good pub or, from the village, along the banks of the tiny River Weaver, which eventually joins the Culm and runs all the way to Exmouth (a half hour drive away). There’s a fishery in the village, too, for keen anglers, while a visit to the beach or to one of the national parks – Dartmoor or Exmoor – is all easily achievable by car. Return via the traditional town of Honiton and pick up some locally made cheeses from the market. It'll be the perfect addition to your evening pizza... cooked in your hut's private pizza oven, naturally.

Dreamhuts Retreat is right on the edge of the Blackdown hills AONB and offers excellent walking (and mountain biking if you bing your own bikes). The traditional market town of Honiton is well worth a visit – the market is held along the wide High Street of this historic lace town every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday – while it takes just over half an hour to reach the cathedral city of Exeter (and the same amount of time to the nearest beach). Closer to home, the local bird of prey centre (3 miles; 01884 277297) is a novel attraction where you can try your hand at falconry. For history, try the National Trust-owned properties of Killerton House (7 miles) and Knightshayes Court (16 miles).Food & Drink
Pre-order luxury welcome hampers, breakfast hampers and tasty BBQ hampers before you arrive at the site or check out the local pubs. There are three great spots within a 30 minute walk. The Keepers Cottage Inn (1¼ miles; 01884 266247) is closest, while Broadhembury (1½ miles) is home to a delightful tearooms and a good village shop for essentials, plus the second pub, The Drewe Arms (01404 841267). The third good local is the Wyndham Arms in Kentisbeare (1½ miles; 01884 266327) where there is also a village shop.Opening Times
