Glamping in the grounds of a grand country house, with sea views and access to a hidden beachy cove

In any other location you might be wooed by the comfort of the bell tents at Battisborough House. The sprung mattresses, the antique bedsteads, the bunting, the lanterns, the lights. But it takes a lot, here, for anything to grab your attention other than view. Set on a perfectly flat terrace of land above the country house's tennis court (which guests are welcome to use), a drop in the landscape reveals the sparkling blue of the sea. On a clear day it seems to merge into the blue of the open sky. 'Welcome to the coast', the view seems to say. Get any closer and you'll be camping in the sea.

There are just three bell tents in total, set beyond the Victorian house, which also offers self catering holidays and residential trips at other times of the year. The premium tent hire company, Ready Tent Hire, had been receiving requests to pitch tents here for years before they finally decided to bed down at the place for good and turn it into a bona fide glamping site. The result is a well-run site with good hot showers and loos, set within some six acres of gardens and grounds, which are largely left untamed so that wildlife can flourish. There's a communal firepit in the trees, a games room in the house that glampers have access to and a croquet lawn for garden games less than 100 metres from your tent.

Unsurprisingly, the most enticing feature is the access to the coast. A tiny stream – and a footpath – leads down in front of the house to Battisborough Cove, a small craggy beach usually occupied by a few guests from the glamping site and perhaps a sea-kayaker or a stand-up paddleboarder out to explore. There are stacks and rocky stumps and the water is an appealing turquoisey blue. Behind it the South West Coast Path runs along the clifftops – follow it east to find a slightly bigger, sandier beach at the mouth of the River Erme or follow it west for more hidden nooks and a picturesque undulating trail. Not that everything has to be found on foot. It's a 20-minute drive to Ivybridge, Dartmoor and popular beaches like Wembury and Bovisand and it's 30 minutes to Plymouth. But, it has to be said, there's something nice about coming somewhere as popular as South Devon and finding the space and the seclusion of Battisborough. It makes you want to simply stick around and enjoy a little quiet time. And perhaps a game of tennis or two.

Facilities

Battisborough Glamping is a wonderful site, in a stunning location designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, directly overlooking the sea. Just a stone's throw away from Mothecombe beach. We offerer 3 luxury bell tents with real double beds and luxury furnishings throughout. We can also add the option to add a second bell tent for children if required, located next to each other. We have spaced the bell tents out around the large site in order to give each bell tent their own privacy. However, we do have a large communal fire pit if guests are feeling sociable. We have two showers, two toilets and a kitchen, games room and a TV room on site. We also have a full size tennis court and a croquet lawn that guests can use. The most unique feature to the site is that it has direct access to the coastal walks and a private access directly to Mothecombe beach. Our site offers our guests a luxury relaxing destination where they can get back to nature and enjoy the beautiful coastline. The site has unspoilt sea views that you could never get tired of. The views can be enjoyed from each individual bell tent, and tents will be spaced at a minimum of 25m apart.

The Owner Says

Battisborough Glamping is set in a stunning location designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, directly overlooking the sea. The house was built in 1898 for the Fox family, Plymouth business owners, who farmed at South Battisborough Farm before the land was amalgamated into the adjoining Flete Estate. For several years from the 1950’s, Battisborough House was run as a boarding school closely modelled on the famous Scottish school, Gordonstoun. In 1987, it became a residential centre set up and managed by Hall Grove School in Surrey. Our glamping site lies within six acres of private gardens on a broad terrace commanding exceptionally fine sea views. Battisborough Glamping is very well resourced. It includes use of a large indoor playroom, known as ‘The Old Pottery’, with its kitchenette, shower and toilet room. Within an attractive sheltered woodland there is a communal fire pit, pizza oven and large BBQ for guests. Logs are available for purchase on site. Use of the hard tennis court is permitted (though shared with guests of the house). Battisborough Glamping is within a quite exceptional setting providing our glampers with privileged access to one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the country. Guests will not be disappointed.
