A cosy, romantic, shepherd's hut overlooking the sparkling Devon coast

Shepherds surely never had it this good — a chic shelter of their own, set on a raised paddock terrace, with uninterrupted views over the hills and down to the sparking Devon coast. Plus, there would have been sheep to chase, whereas at Synderborough Farm all you have to do is enjoy the panorama and pour another drink. The pretty shepherd's hut is the work of owner Monique and her husband, who used to breed and train racehorses, but now invite you onto their lush paddock to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Sid Valley, in the heart of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Monique is originally from France, so you might hear her call the hut a roulotte, which is a traditional French caravan with a bowed roof. Shepherd's hut, roulotte — let's split the difference and just say that this cosy little bolthole is an English country escape with French sensibilities. Built by a local craftsman, it's charmingly appointed with crafted wood panelling, bed and storage cupboards, red-checked curtains, hanging baskets, and a stained-glass window. Places to hang things and put things have been well thought out. The bed's a small four-foot double, so tucked-in and intimate, but that's what you've come for, let's face it. There's no heating, but the hut is fully insulated, which keeps morning chills at bay, and there's a firepit outside for evening chats and stargazing.

A small kitchen has all you need to make simple meals — a rustic table for two sits by the window — though there's a pub within walking distance and plenty of great places to eat nearby. That French sensibility makes itself felt in the welcome, too; a pack with fresh eggs, honey from the farm's hives, and other local produce are waiting for you on arrival. The basics — tea, coffee, oil, and vinegar — are also provided, so you should get through the first meal and drink with little trouble. There's electric power inside the hut, and a camping loo (that you'll need to empty yourself). A hot shower and another sink are outside in a separate hut.

It's a private space so you don't have to worry about being overlooked — in fact, you're the ones doing the overlooking, across the fields and valley to the coast at nearby Sidmouth. it's those wonderful views that are — eventually — going to drag you away, either down to the coast for a day on the beach or a hike on the cliffs, or inland to timeless villages, market towns, and country parks. And when you're done for the day, you can return to your romantic retreat at Synderborough Farm, offer thanks that there are no sheep to deal with, and break open the wine for a night by the fire.
