Shiny American-style glamping in an altogether British setting

If you want to look the part at Glamstreams pull on a pair of Levis, lace up your Converse and chuck a trucker’s cap on your head. Two all-American Airstream caravans will provide the backdrop to today’s vintage-filtered Instagram post. Two are the classic aluminium of a thousand movie cameos, while one is an unusual pearlescent blue. Found across the USA by owner Nick, and rescued from various states of disrepair, they're now parked up at Brookover Farm next to the vast Orchardleigh Estate, home to a golf course, a historic house and 500 acres of parkland. It's all-American accommodation in a very British spot.

Each van provides self-contained accommodation with a well-equipped kitchenette, a shower and an eco-friendly, waterless toilet. Beth sleeps up to five while Gloria, the dinkiest and older of the two, can still sleep a family with enough space for four. Linen and towels are provided along with a healthy dose of 60s and 70s style. Outside there’s seating and a fire pit and the vista from your van is across sheep-grazed fields and rolling hills; the soundtrack is of the Mells river babbling by. You can fish or set out on a walk on footpaths through the fields.

Frome, just two miles away, is home to the closest pubs, independent shops and a thriving market scene. You can reach the town on foot or set out in the other direction to explore Orchardleigh’s parkland (the house and gardens are not open to the public). Further afield, but not far, there’s an even grander estate that’s worth a visit: Longleat with its house, gardens and famous drive-through safari park that offers a taste of life on the plains, complete with lions, tigers and elephants. When you’ve finished your African encounter, it’ll be back to your American base in the best-of-British countryside. Three continents in one day... not bad for a holiday in Somerset.

Our GlamStreams Airstreams caravans are completely self-sufficient - they are tiny houses on wheels. They boast ovens, fridges, ice boxes, wine chiller in Beth and a complete set of pans, crockery, linens and towels. Each van has its own private bathroom, with shower, basin and eco-friendly water-free toilet. Your own table and chairs on the private deck mean that eating outdoors and enjoying the sights and sounds of nature is definitely on the agenda. The Airstreams are fully set up, ready for your arrival. Your bed is made, the towels are on the rail, and the wine chiller is cooling nicely.

Suitable For

The lovely GlamStreams Glamping site is suitable for families and groups up to 9 people. We can sleep 9 people in the Airstreams, and 2 people in each tent. Please contact us if you would like to pitch one extra tent per caravan plus a pitch fee.

I'm afraid no pets are allowed on the site.

There are great walking routes right from the farm, offering peaceful walks with stunning views. For cyclists, the Farm is linked to the cycle path that runs from Mells and Radstock.

Golfers will doubtless head over the hill to the fabulous 18 hole Orchardleigh Golf Course, right next door.

Nearby Frome is always a delight. Stroll along the lanes and cobbled streets, and check out the many independent shops, cafes, bars and brasseries. The Frome market is huge, and attracts a fabulously eclectic bunch of stall holders. A must see!

Somerset is an amazing county and you are ideally located to make the most of it from Black Sheep Glamping.

Within 25 minutes’ drive you’ll find the pretty town of Bruton, with attractions including Hauser and Wirth Art Gallery, At the Chapel restaurant, bakery, pizza takeaway, and the heavenly Godminster cheeses. The stunning Georgian city of Bath and the renowned Longleat Safari Park are also just half an hour away.

If you wish to venture further afield Black Sheep Glamping is within an hour of various other attractions such as Cheddar Gorge, the city of Bristol, Avalon Marshes wildlife centre, the famous festival town of Glastonbury, Stonehenge, The Hawk Conservancy Trust and Haynes International Museum.

Food & Drink

Nick recommends At The Chapel (01749 814070), a restaurant, bakery and winestore in Bruton, 13 miles from Glamstreams and The Roth Bar and Grill by the Hauser and Wirth Art Gallery (01749 814700) in the same town. This is also a good place to pick up the fabulous locally-produced Godminster cheeses as they have a shop on the high street.

Closer to site, the last-Sunday-of-the-month Frome Independent Market is huge and offers everything under the sun! There is also a large food element if you're lucky enough to catch it, and there's a more regular market in Frome every Wednesday and Saturday morning too. Try The Artisan (01373 300102) in town for somewhere to eat and drink while you're out.

Getting There

From Frome or the A361, take the A362 towards Radstock. After about two miles, just after the road crosses the River Mells, you will see the grand gateway into the Orchardleigh Estate. Turn right here and instead of driving through the ornate gates, take the right fork signposted for Brookover Farm.

The nearest railway station is in Frome, just over two miles away. From there you could take a taxi for the remaining part of the journey (book in advance).

Fabulous spot for a family party!

We booked both of Nick's Glamstreams out for our family party and it was the perfect setting! The central decking area was just what we needed to come together for BBQ's and nights by the fire. The nearby public footpaths led us around the farm and through beautiful woodlands. We will definitely be back!
