Three high-spec glamping pods, perfect for visiting the Shropshire Hills

Eastridge Glamping presents its visitors with a pristine, handcrafted, high-spec pod from which to explore the Shropshire Hills. Think Hobbit house but with a modern flair; this is a true labour of love from its owners. Deborah and her family concluded this was the perfect spot for a glamping location and wanted to share the wonders of the magical Eastridge woods with its rolling hills and idyllic landscape.

Throughout lockdown, juggling the management of their working farm and building a glampsite from the ground up has been a worthwhile challenge for the Pinches family. The Long Mynd and Stiperstones Ridge make for a stunning backdrop which, together, make up the largest area of heathland in this area of natural beauty. A haven of tranquillity, the Shropshire Hills are well known for mountain biking and walking trails, so make sure you bring your walking boots and embrace the thigh burn that the hills give you — the panoramic views are more than worth it. Top tip: in late summer, when the hills are flourishing, look out for bilberry and the rare green hairstreak butterfly.

Close to Shrewsbury and near to the Welsh border lies Eastridge Glamping, where Deborah has provided welcome packs for all who stay, including insider info on the best walking routes and fun days out. Each pod has two single stackable beds with mattresses, so just bring along bedding and any extra beds you may require. The pods contain a kettle, plug sockets, and (hurrah!) an electric barbecue grill in the dining area for your morning fry-up needs. Just a few metres from your pod there’s a toilet and shower block (with flushing loos) and a washing-up station. Deborah has really thought of everything, as there’s also a shared fridge and freezer for guest use.

If walks and mountain biking trails aren’t enough to entice you, The Mytton Arms pub is a four-minute walk away and with the centre of Shrewsbury only a 20-minute drive away; you’ll be spoilt for choice with restaurants. Try The Boathouse, which sits right on the river and has picturesque waterfront views. Beautiful Attingham Park is a National Trust house with a walled garden and playing field, where you can spot the deer and enjoy a picnic on the grounds. The star of the show around this area is the Shropshire Hills, so do ask Deborah for her favourite walks and trails as they are immensely proud of the magic they’ve created here.

Each Pod has two single stackable beds with mattresses which can be turned into a double at your request. Just bring along bedding and any extra beds required, the pods can sleep up to four people. The Pods also contain a kettle, table, stools, heating, electric sockets and an outdoor electric BBQ grill. There is a brand new toilet/shower block (with flushing loos) just a few metres away and they also have a washing up area with a shared fridge/freezer for guest use. There is a picnic bench outside each pod, so you can sit down and eat your grub after a long day tackling the hills.

Suitable For

Campers, caravans, groups under 21 - no. Glampers, dogs, children - yes.

The pods are in a quiet location on the edge of the small village of Habberley and are five minute walk from the nearest pub, The Mytton Arms (01743 792490). This site is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area and has an abundance of footpaths, bridleways and local trails. Eastridge Woods, located right behind the glampsite, has one walking trail and two bike trails which you can access straight from your pod. The site is also in a convenient position to visit Shrewsbury, a beautiful historical town, which is a 20 minute drive away. Why not visit the historic Shrewsbury Castle (01743 258885). Ironbridge is a world heritage site and 40 minute drive away. For another great family day out, you can head to Blists Hill Victorian Town (01952 435 900) where you can enter a Victorian bakery and cash in your money for shillings and farthings and meet actors in traditional Victorian outfits.

Food & Drink

A four minute walk away, you have popular watering hole and pub, The Mytton Arms - regularly frequented by the locals, it has their seal of approval.
The nearby village of Pontesbury, just a five minute drive you'll find Hignetts the local Butcher & Baker and another local pub The Nags Head, which serves traditional pub grub, local ales and has a beer garden, great if you have a bike in tow. A 20 minute drive away, in the centre of Shrewsbury, you'll find The Boathouse (01743 231658). They serve traditional pub classics with a twist, not to mention the riverside view is stunning. Darwins Kitchen, (01743 358870) also in Shrewsbury, has quirky interiors and delicious locally sourced food, definitely Shrewsbury's best kept secret... their espresso martini is also pretty special.
