Private, adults only glamping in a romantic Ceredigion setting, with exceptional kitchen and shower facilities – plus, a wood-fired hot tub.

There's something ironic about the UK glamping scene. Corrugated iron boxes get rebranded as ‘romantic shepherd’s huts’, Native American-style tipi’s are manufactured in Totnes, and safari tent stays are available where the closest thing you'll get to wildlife is a hedgehog. But, for Brits who love a posh pitch, you can find something slightly more special at Go Eco Glamping in Ceredigion, where a genuine Mongolian-made yurt (or ger as the Mongols call them) creates a tranquil space to holiday in a quiet corner Mid Wales.

Unusually for a glampsite, this one’s adults-only. If that sounds a little X-rated, fear not, Go Eco Glamping – home to just the one yurt, ensuring space and privacy – is as wholesome as they come. Step inside, and a sumptuous four-poster, king-sized bed dominates the yurt, insulated tightly in sheep's wool. Antique furniture lines the periphery, there’s wood burner to keep you toasty, a comfy sofa to snuggle up on in front of the fire, and criss-crossed walls with a magnificent central crown wheel that lets the light flood in.

Perhaps the real key to the site's appeal, though, is the facilities on offer. Sitting adjacent to the yurt in a private shepherd's hut is a cute kitchen with plenty of cooking equipment. On the other side: a bathroom kitted out with a walk-in shower and (hallelujah!) quality towels, bathrobes and slippers. But there's more. Step out onto the deck and you'll find the grand attraction – your very own wood-fired hot tub. There’s something deeply satisfying about this sort of off-grid getaway, and owners Terresa and Chris have excelled in creating an eco-conscious abode without scrimping on luxury and comfort.

As for days out, Terresa and Chris can point you to the region's best walks (the Ceredigion Coast Path is a good start), or you can visit Aberaeron and New Quay – two pretty harbour towns worth exploring, where you can also take a boat to go dolphin-spotting. Not that there's any obligation to attempt the highly adventurous. Most guests like to relax in their slice of authentic Mongolian luxury as Red kites and buzzards swoop so low you can count their feathers.

Facilities

2 Mongolian yurts, insulated with sheep’s wool and heated via a glass-fronted log-burning stove. Each yurt features a romantic 4-poster bed (linen, towels, robes, slippers, toiletries all provided), sofa, dining table and chairs and remote control electric lighting, candles and fairy lights. Outside, there's a fire pit, plus sun loungers on the large, elevated deck. Large walk-in shower, proper flushing toilet, lit mirror and organic toiletries. Wood-fired hot tub accessible from the deck. The meadow is full of wildlife, and the nearby stream is occasionally visited by an otter. Red kites, buzzards, woodpeckers, nut hatches, herons, ducks, swallows, goldcrests, long tailed tits live on site or visit regularly.

Adults only. Tents, caravans, children, large groups and pets – no.

Nearby

Llanachaeron National Trust property (01545 570200) – a Georgian villa, organic farm, walled-garden, lake and woodland walk – is only 20 minutes away. The woods and gardens are free to visit and dogs (on leads) are welcome in the woodland and parkland walks. You can walk along a disused railway to the scenic coastal town of Aberaeron, and the pretty harbour town of New Quay is within a 30-minute drive – boasting fabulous views of Cardigan Bay. Dolphin spotting boat trips are available in the summer from both towns, and they each have a wide variety of places to eat out. A little further on is Aberystwyth with its pier and funicular cliff railway. You can also catch the huffing and puffing Vale of Rheidol Railway (01970 625819) steam train through the Welsh countryside to the famous Devil’s Bridge Falls (01970 890233). Closer to home, the countryside lanes around the site are very quiet and perfect for a stroll to admire the scenery.

Food & Drink

Full kitchen facilities are right next to the yurt, plus a fire-pit for roasting marshmallows. Lampeter is just 10 minutes away and has a variety of independent shops, cafés, deli’s and restaurants – along with 2 supermarkets for supplies. Lloyds Fish and Chip Shop (01570 422366) is regularly voted 'Number 1 Fish and Chip Shop in Wales', whilst The Shapla Tandoori (01570 422076) also comes highly recommended. Mulberry Bush Wholefoods (01570 423317) has a café upstairs with a great veggie menu. Aberaeron is 30 minutes away and has a nice selection of restaurants: The Hive (01545 570445) and the Harbour Master (01545 570755) are both right by the harbour and popular with locals.

The Owner Says

Oakvale is completely off grid.  We have our own solar power supply and our water comes from a borehole and is filtered on site.  We try to reduce our impact on the environment and recycle/upcycle where possible.  Off grid doesn’t have to mean basic and we have done our best to provide a truly luxurious glamping experience.

Oakvale is not a farm.  The site features hedges and trees and a grassy wildflower meadow, which is home to the yurt ensemble.  At the bottom of the hill is a small lake that is filled with many fascinating creatures, however, there are no fish in it due to a visiting otter!  Adjacent to the lake is an area of wetland and a stream runs alongside.  We are working very hard to preserve the wildlife on the site and to encourage more to come.

Glamping at Oakvale is all about connecting with nature and feeling relaxed in a beautiful environment.  But, with all the comforts of home and extra little touches that will make your stay feel really special!

Getting There

The Sat-Nav will direct you to the centre of the site's postcode (SA48 7LF) which is on the right road, but stops at a derelict farm about ½ mile away. With the farm on your right, continue for half a mile, go over a small bridge then up a steep hill. You will see signs and gravel entrance at the top of the hill on your left. From Lampeter: take the A475 to Llanwnnen. At the mini-roundabout take the 2nd exit (sign posted Temple Bar / Cribyn). After ¼-mile turn left at the Chapel (Capel y Groes) on a sharp right-hand bend then take the first right. Oakvale is just under 2 miles on the left, at the top of a hill – approx 400m from the crossroads at the end of the road. The nearest mainline stations are at Carmarthen and Aberystwyth. Pick up can be arranged from either if required.

It Was Perfect!

We stayed for two nights. Prior to arrival we had planned various activities and places to visit in the local area. However, we didn’t leave the site until it was time to check out! It was perfect and we had a wonderful stay. Terresa and Chris have thought of absolutely everything. There were small touches everywhere. We kept discovering things and couldn’t believe how thoughtful our hosts had been in setting everything up. Everything from the welcome hamper, the extensive range of teas and coffees, the reading light in the bedside table to the games chest and painting set. We also loved the beautiful setting with uninterrupted views, lovely walks around the lake and being surrounded by wildlife. I can’t recommend this place highly enough!
