  • Comfortable king size bed and a bunk bed for two kids
  • Extremely spacious, offering all your home comforts, including bathroom and a log burner
  • Clean linen and towels provided

No matter how you choose to spend your days, evenings at this lone shepherd hut will be wonderfully comfortable. You'll find a king-sized bed, toilet, shower, kettle, and fridge – but there’s no television or WiFi. So you’ll have to make do with the view; fortunately, it’s a pretty good one with rolling countryside for days – and the sky at night makes for excellent viewing. Here, the resident birdsong and visiting bats, red kites and hares make this place ideal for nature lovers, but Brondel has a wider appeal, too. Tucked away on a smallholding in mid-Wales, it’s the perfect place for a romantic retreat or a quiet family getaway.

Walkers can stroll a mile-and-a-half in either direction to find a pub, while kids can explore the 23-acre site to meet ducks, chickens and sheep. But it’s not all sleepy pursuits. This is Wales after all – the UK's adventure capital, with the Cambrian mountains to climb, bike trails to conquer and the stunning coastal path within reach at Aberystwyth.

Activities

Guests are free to roam the 23-acre smallholding. A footpath through the fields offers a route north to a highly-recommended pub in Pisgah or south to the picturesque village of Llanfihangel Y Creuddyn – where there’s a pub and a 13th century church. For a more challenging walk, head to the summit of 741-metre Plynlimon (or Pumlumon Fawr) about 15 miles from site. The Wales Coast Path also offers fantastically scenic walking and you can join it at Abersytwyth. The Rheidol Riding Centre (01970 880863) is 3½ miles from site and Devil’s Bridge Falls (01970 890233) are 7 miles away. From there you can step aboard the Vale of Rheidol Railway (01970 625819) for a scenic journey to the seaside town of Aberstwyth. From site, Aberystwyth is a 15-minute drive (just over 7 miles). It has shops, eateries, a castle and is home to the National Library of Wales. For a wilder beach with dunes and plenty of space head just north of town to Ynyslas Beach. Mountain bikers will find fantastic riding at Bwlch Nant yr Arian (01970 890453) 9 miles away and the Hafod Estate (01974 282887) is about 10 miles from site.

Food & Drink

You can help yourself to freshly-laid eggs on site but, for everything else, head to Abersytwyth where you’ll find a wide range of shops including supermarkets. There is a farmers’ market in the town on the first and third Saturdays in the month. There are 2 pubs within walking distance of site (1½ miles) which serve food: the highly-recommended Halfway Inn (01970 880631) in Pisgah and The Farmer’s Arms (01974 261275) in Llanfihangel Y Creuddyn. For a special dinner, you might like to try the restaurant at Nanteos (01970 600522) – Rhys and Elen recommend the tasting menu. They also recommend Pysgoty (01970 624611), a small fish restaurant in Aberystwyth, where you’ll find plenty of other eateries too.

An incredible and idyllic experience, 100% recommend!

We had a wonderful stay at the shepherd's hut, located on the most picturesque and peaceful farm. The hut itself is much bigger than you think, easily housing a king size bed and a comprehensive kitchen. The bathroom is fitted to an extremely high standard and the shower is both powerful and roomy. Elen left plenty of wood for the little log burner which does a great job of warming the hut up on the colder evenings and we were also given extra wood for a fire pit outside one night. Elen was an awesome host, finding us utensils to toast our marshmallows and even offering us coffee and croissants, still hot from the oven! The hut was very clean and has all the mod cons you could need for a short break. We'd thoroughly recommend staying here, located just a short drive to Aberystwyth and the many bars and restaurants there. We also has a 3 course meal at the local Y Ffarmers, which served excellent food and is only a 15 minute walk away. Book now!

Fabulous haven away from day to day stress beautiful surroundings with just the best hostess

Ellen and family are just lovely. The shepherd hut is absolutely beautifully done and we felt so relaxed. Even with two kids, two dogs and two adults there was plenty of space, a real home from home with superb facilities, great bathroom with delicious shower, and super outside area with room to explore the land around. We enjoyed fresh eggs for breakfast. Local pubs, y farmers and halfway inn both served yummy food....and gin!! Would recommend to anyone after a unique stay in a beautiful location. Thank you Ellen x

Getting There

From the small village of Llanfihangel y Creuddyn, take the narrow road to the right of The Farmer’s Arms pub. Follow this road over a little bridge and you will start to climb the hill. Once you start to climb, take the second left down a narrow lane signposted Tynfrondel/alltfedw. Follow this road until the road forks. Take a left and this will lead you to the shepherd’s hut.

The nearest mainline railway station is at Aberystwyth. There are infrequent buses to Llanfihangel y Creuddyn which is 1½ miles from Brondel Glamping but Elen and Rhys are able to offer a pick-up service from the village. Contact them directly to arrange this.
