Family-sized safari lodges on the crest of a hill, with meandering red deer as your closest neighbours

Hot showers, incredibly comfortable beds, fabulous views and deer. Set in an elevated position in a 15-acre field, this novel glamping site finds itself in the heart of a Devon deer park, with red deer nibbling at the grass around your safari tent veranda and strutting their stuff through the enclosure in front of the lodges. Owners Paul and Kylie describe it as 'a rural glamping haven with a difference’. And given most glamping sites don't boast hungry ruminants hoofing around in front of their safari tents, describing it as 'different' is probably an understatement.

At it's heart, of course, Wootten Deer Park is still a glamping site that helps fulfil the staples of a good holiday. The lodges are comfortably furnished with fully fitted kitchens, proper beds, shower rooms and cosy living spaces with wood burners and deep sofas. Comforts include WiFi and proper TVs – ideal should you get a rainy day. The tent interiors are wood-clad, with sliding barn style doors providing more privacy than usual glamping digs afford. Out front, meanwhile, each tent has a raised front deck that stretches through the fence of the deer enclosure so that the animals can wander right alongside.

Most of the deer here are farmed for the park's sustainable Devon venison (BBQ and breakfast packs can be delivered to your tent). But some have been hand reared and end up being family pets instead. Visit between May and September and you may well find you have the opportunity to help bottle feed orphaned fawns. Doing so comes with the disclaimer of possibly making a friend for life – the deer may want to see you just as often as you want to spend time with them.

Nearby Dartmoor (around 20 minutes in the car) means that, elsewhere, you can enjoy picnics with the famous Dartmoor ponies and the national park is also becoming particularly well known as a good spot for seeing otters (though they're still an elusive creature). Indeed, one of the closest places in the park is the West Okement River and the Meldon Reservoir, a wonderfully watery place to explore (and with good access for visitors). For wildlife, then, Wootten Deer Park is pretty tough to top. Handy, then, that it's so very comfortable too.

All facilities are within your lodge, fully fitted kitchen, shower room with shower, WC, sink and mirror, dining area with table and 6 chairs, sitting area with 2 x sofas & wood burner, both bedrooms have king size beds, shelving, dressing table area and hanging space, both with solid wood sliding doors for privacy. The lodge is wood clad internally to add cosiness, warmth and privacy, the front of the lodge and roof remains canvas and the whole of the front of the lodge will roll up or zip off, creating a fabulous open plan area on to the very large 6m x 6m decking.

We sell our own venison on site, so if you are keen to try some, we have venison BBQ packs (sausages and burgers) and steaks here ready for your stay. Well behaved dogs are accepted.

Getting There

From the M5 junction 31, take the A30. Come off at Whiddon Down services, take the first right just after the services. Stay on that road for around six miles to the end. At Debath Cross, turn right on to the A3072 towards Bow/Copplestone/Crediton and continue straight on this road. After two and a half miles, take the turning on the left towards Nichols Nymett. Continue along this road and up the hill to the T-junction called Nichols Nymett Cross, then turn right and continue on this road (don’t turn off this road, follow the road bend to the left at Chubs cross). Continue winding around the lanes and you will start to drop down the hill to Great Wooden Cross. At the junction, bare left towards Newton and Bondleigh. 30 yards from this junction (and before the humpback bridge), the entrance to Wootten Deer Park & Safari Lodges will be on your right.

The nearest bus stop is in Bow just under two miles away. You can catch the train from Copplestone, Sampford Courtnay or Lapford, but a car (or taxi) is required to get from these stations to the glamping site.

A perfect family holiday

We have just returned from a magical week away staying at Wootten Deer Safari Park with our 20 month old. It was the perfect holiday. Kylie and Paul were friendly and helpful. They were great at communicating with us and happily shared their hints and tips for family days out in the local area. Our son adored being up close with the deer (especially when we even got to bottle feed a little fawn) and his daily ‘tractor’ rides on the safari style golf buggy. The fire and electric blankets kept us toasty warm at night and we were lucky enough to enjoy some October sunshine in the hammocks enjoying the view. Our son was a little too young to make the most of the fantastic outdoor games- croquet, boules, chess, cricket… but I can only imagine how much fun older children (or big-kids) would find these. The accommodation is beautiful with a fully equipped kitchen and all the utensils and miscellaneous kitchen must-haves you could wish for: toasted cheese sandwich bags, who knew?! The lodge has a proper bathroom with a shower that rivals most 5* hotels and the thoughtful touches and finishes make it feel really homely. You can make what you want of your time staying at Wootten Deer Park and could happily spend many days on site or you can be out all day exploring all that Devon has to offer. We feel we barely scratched the surface and are already plotting a return visit in 2022!

Amazing stay in the most Incredible Setting

This has to be the most relaxing holiday I have ever been on. We stayed in the incredible safari lodges for 4 nights and it was absolutely perfect. Our neighbours were some lovely Deer who would come up and say hi every morning. I have never stayed in a place quite like this before. The lodge itself was gorgeous, it had a fully kitted out kitchen, a lovely shower and extremely comfortable beds. The log burner heated the entire lodge and was so relaxing. Those colder nights you were able to turn on the electric blanket for that extra comfort. We stayed with our young children who absolutely loved the place and didn’t want to leave. It was so safe and secure they could walk out the front door and go exploring on their own. They loved seeing the sheep and deer who surrounded our lodge. They were fortunate enough to be able to feed the deer with Kylie as well. She was so good with the kids, she showed them how to bottle feed one of the Deer and then we hand fed the others. It was an amazing experience for all of us. Kylie and Paul were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble, even down to coming out one evening to get the fire started again!!! Kylie and Paul are a lovely couple who were welcoming from the moment we got there. They told us about some amazing places to visit whilst we were staying at the Lodge and were always on the end of the phone if we needed anything. I would 100% recommend anyone to stay at the lodge. You wont regret it. It is paradise, in a gorgeous setting. It is the perfect place to recharge away from daily life. We will definitely be back next year
