This beautifully made lodge boasts every mod con you could imagine; at its heart there’s a fully-equipped kitchen area, a woodburning stove, big comfortable sofa, a bedroom with king-sized bed, plus outdoor decking for a spot of alfresco dining and a private log burning Hot tub to do some star gazing. At Oaklands Glamping, there’s no need to trample through the fields to freshen up in the morning either as your safari tent has been lovingly kitted-out with a roll-top bath in your private bathroom, which also plays host to a basin and toilet. Linen, bedding and towels are also provided. The safari tent can be enjoyed throughout the year; guests naturally spend the long, summer days on the veranda or exploring, but as the temperature falls, autumn evenings are well spent snuggled up by the woodburner in your fluffy slippers. With some of the best views Wales has to offer, and high quality features, you won't fail to feel King of the Castle at this wonderful glamping getaway.
Oaklands is a glamping site that first excites, then relaxes. Wherever you decide to rest your head at this hilltop hideaway – whether it be in a high-end safari tent or bespoke-crafted treehouse for two – breathtaking south-facing views and luxury features are guaranteed. The concept was born with the idea of enjoying the Welsh countryside in style, and the site’s small collection accommodation (there’s only three units onsite) will impress even the most experienced glamper. From your private veranda you can survey your domain; look out for Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway’s narrow gauge steam train puffing across the landscape, and keep your eyes peeled for red kites and buzzards.

The 13th century redbrick Powis Castle (01938 551944) was originally constructed by Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn, Prince of Powys, and subsequently enriched by generations of the Clive and Herbert families. Perhaps the highlight is the Clive Museum, which houses treasures brought back from the Far East by Clive of India, the British conqueror of Bengal at the 1757 Battle of Plassey. The castle is also home to the famous Welsh daffodil and beautiful magnolia trees. Hop aboard the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway (01938 810441) and enjoy a ride on a huffing and puffing locomotive. They boast comfortable carriages, heated in cold weather where you can stand and watch the rolling countryside, rushing rivers, and grazing sheep and cattle. It’s a 45-minute ride each way, and at the Llanfair Caereinion terminal, you can have lunch (with cakes!) in the friendly tearoom, or set off to explore the countryside before your return journey. On the banks of the River Severn, Glansevern Hall Gardens (01686 640644) offer 25 acres of diverse landscape. There's plenty to explore, including a huge lake, cascading water garden, woodland walks, charming folly garden and a secluded bird hide.

Food & Drink

Save a trip to the shops and visit the on-site honesty larder, where you will find a fridge freezer and pantry area full of your basic cooking requirements: sausages, bacon, eggs, bread, butter, milk, jams, cereal, crisps, chocolate, and marshmallows. Just a 5-minute walk up the lane (turn left when you come out of the site entrance) Henllan (01938 810343) is a local pub and restaurant which dishes-up a great Sunday lunch, however you will need to book and it’s only open weekends. As you head back towards Welshpool at the roundabout you will find the Raven Inn (01938 553101) a newly refurbished establishment that serves freshly prepared food to order. The menu changes with the seasons and serves every day from 12pm-9.30pm. For something a bit special and excellent quality you can take a drive to Plas Yn Dinas (01691 829055) that specialises in local ales and fine country dining. The Bay Tree Vintage Tea Rooms (01938 555456) is a great place for afternoon tea, whilst The Lakeside Restaurant sits in 60 acres of lush countryside, overlooking the golf course and makes an ideal spot for lunch.
