Luxury geodesic domes with hot tubs in the Clwydian mountains of North Wales

In the shadow of the heather-clad hills of the Clwydian Range, the silhouette of two dome-roofed geo lodges echo the contours of the surrounding landscape. But in the light of day, these modern constructions look a little like something from another world. “I wanted to offer something different, something that wasn’t already in the area,” says glamping site owner and local girl, Rebecca Evans. And with Tŷ Famau Geo Lodges, she’s certainly achieved that.

The two domed lodges on site have been customised to provide something you won’t find anywhere else. It’s the type of family glamping that Rebecca, her husband and three children would love to find on their own camping holidays. They have cleverly added dividing walls to create bedrooms and bathrooms inside their charming semi-spheres. It means that when bedtime comes for younger campers, the adults can stay up to watch the stars appear above the hills through the huge picture windows.

Each dome has been fitted and kitted out to offer everything you need for a self-catering holiday. And with water, gas and electricity all connected, they’ve landed at the high-end of modern glamping where the living is as easy as you want it to be – hot tub and all. But there are rustic touches too; a firepit with tripod and Dutch oven cooking pot outside, a Croeso mat to welcome you in and the amber glow from the wood-burning stove.

While the domes are new, Rebecca is not. Her family has been on this land for three generations and her husband grew up in these hills too. They’ll offer you advice on where to buy the best local produce, which pathways to follow to their favourite pub and how long it’s been since the last red kite sighting. Walking and mountain biking are the best ways to explore this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and you can head for the heights of Moel Famau, the 278-metre peak of the Clwydian Range which is easily reached via a wide, popular path. The views west from the carpark are impressive enough, let alone from the hilltop itself, where the crumbled base of an old tower built in 1810 reveals views of Snowdonia, Liverpool and the Wirral on clear days. For a flatter stroll, try Loggerheads Country Park not far from the foot of the Moel Famau. The town of Llangollen is just ten miles away, too, with its horse-drawn boat rides and steam trains.

Draenog Aframe with hottub & views
Wonderful weekend!
We had an amazing stay at Ty Famau! It was such a beautiful setting and so peaceful. We stayed in the wooden lodge (3 of us) and it was perfect - equipped with everything you need (except a hairdryer) and really nicely done inside. It was all very comfortable and very clean, but the main draw has to be the outside space and the hot tub! Sitting in the hot tub under the stars was the highlight of our trip! We also really enjoyed exploring the local area, and had a lovely walk and pub lunch at the Dinorben Arms. We would definitely love to return to Ty Famau again!

Pointy hobbit house.
The 'pointy hobbit house' was our holiday home for a week. It was private, although close to the geo lodges the layout of the setting was great. It was a calm and tranquil place where we were able to unwind. The wood fired hot tub was perfect. A wonderful part of the world to explore.

Gwdihŵ Dome with hottub & views
Had an amazing 3 nights with my 2 sons February half-term, the inside is done out to high spec, we had the wood burner on in the evenings for maximum comfort. The hot tub takes some time to heat up, took us 6 hours before it got to 38 degrees, but it was lovely looking up at the stars at night time in a lovely steamy bath. Would love to return again one day. (the logs to buy are softwood and burn quickly, so if you want the hot tub (wood fired) and indoor wood burner on you'll get through lots of wood, £10 a box did seem slightly pricey but I work with wood so took my own hardwood supply)

Although our visit was short it gave us a beautiful place to completely switch off and relax. The AFrame is beautifully appointed and very comfortable. The hot tub is glorious when you get it nice and hot as per the instructions. Get that fire roaring! We will be returning for a longer break, also so my daughter can see the cute cat that roams. No WiFi and little signal means you can truly relax! You won't be disappointed!

Offa’s Dyke footpath is a few miles away – Ty Famau can provide a pick-up/drop-off service for walkers (from either the Crown Inn at Llandegla or the Clwyd Gate Inn at Llanbedr). Loggerheads Country Park (01824 712757), 13 miles away, has some well-marked walks. It’s also home to the Clwydian Range Centre, with information on the local area, and a café. For mountain biking, head to Coed Llandegla Forest (01978 751656), 7 miles away. The historic market town of Ruthin is 3 miles away with eateries, shops and a craft centre (01824 704774). Other facilities include a leisure centre with tourist attractions including Ruthin Gaol (01824 708281), winner of a Visit Wales 'Hidden Gem' Award. The bigger town of Llangollen is a drive of about 25 minutes away (10 miles), famed for its International Eisteddfod Music Festival which takes place in July. The town is also home to the Llangollen Railway (01978 860979) where you can step aboard a steam train and Llangollen Wharf (01978 860702) from where horse-drawn boat trips along the canal can be taken. The closest pub is a 15-minute walk away and is your hosts’ favourite; the Three Pigeons Inn (01824 703178) serving hearty meals and cask ales. In Ruthin there’s a wide choice of cafes, restaurants and places to pick up local produce. Try Café R at the Ruthin Craft Centre (01824 708099) for Welsh breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas. A bit further, out of town, the local, seasonal menus at Nant Y Felin (01745 890 834), and The White Horse (01824 790218) get the thumbs-up from Rebecca too. Look out for Chilly Cow Ice Cream (07968 993495) or head to their farm and their Cow Shed ice cream parlour a few miles north of Ruthin.
