Luxurious, en-suite roundhouses in the grounds of a Welsh B&B with views of the Clwydian hills

Our advice when booking a holiday at The Laundry? Don’t make dinner reservations for night one. It’s not because there aren’t any good options nearby. There are. But you might just find yourself so wowed by the place that you won’t want to leave. “We couldn't believe our luck when we turned the corner and saw the beautiful Tilia roundhouse and the phenomenal views,” reads one of the most recent reviews. “We even cancelled our evening plans the first night to spend it under stars by the fire instead. It’ll be hard to beat this holiday.”

We couldn’t agree more. For couples looking for somewhere to truly relax, it doesn’t get much better than the two timber roundhouses at The Laundry. Facing east to Moel Famau and the Clwydian hills, the roundhouses fall well at the upper end of the glamping spectrum. This is accommodation for people who appreciate high thread count sheets, quality bath robes, underfloor heating and the host’s attention to detail. That can be seen in everything from the stylish design touches in the en-suite bathrooms to the carefully chosen, locally baked, sourdough bread in the welcome hamper.

As you might imagine from these credentials, it’s an adults-only retreat. You might see it as a boutique hotel room that’s been separated from its neighbours and slung out into the garden, enveloped and orientated around the great outdoors. Each Instagram-friendly roundhouse has a wraparound deck with a sheltered outdoor cooking area as well as a handy indoor mini kitchen. Scandi-styled Tilia roundhouse has a sunken fire pit, while the more rustic Ilex has a covered seating area.

Guests have free range of the beautiful walled garden, lovingly tended to by hosts Tom and Jenny. They live, and operate a B&B room, in the listed 18th-century former laundry building which gives this site its name. It once serviced the rather grand Llanrhaedr Hall next door (it’s now a care home). If you’re particularly interested, you can book in with Tom and Jenny for a tour of the gardens or you may choose to explore further afield. The village has a pretty church with a noteworthy window and a family-run restaurant that’s recommended. There’s a tucked-away pub a couple of villages away that’s great for a celebratory dinner and there’s plenty of walking in the near area too. And, if that’s not enough, there’s more; as virtually the whole of North Wales is within an hour’s scenic drive.

What a fantastic place! Stunning views, so peaceful and so beautifully fitted out. So much thought has gone into ensuring that everything you need for a homely stay, is there. Top quality, too. Tom and Jenny were so lovely and made us very welcome. Loved the gardens. Will definitely be back.

Nearby attractions

The Laundry is at the foot of the Clwydian range of mountains, with the two most spectacular of the hills – Moel Famau (the highest) and Moel Arthur (the remains of an iron-age hill fort) – both less than 15 minutes away by car. Neither are overly demanding walks, though Moel Famau has a couple of different carparks and multiple routes to choose from, so you can make it as demanding as you like. The views from the top are spectacular, with Liverpool and the Wirral, Snowdonia and Cheshire all visible on a clear day. The Offa’s Dyke path is the longest walk in the vale of Clwyd and runs along the top of the range taking in both of the hills mentioned. If you want to walk directly from The Laundry, try the pretty route up to the well above St Dyfnog’s Church. In the middle ages St. Dyfnog’s well became a place of pilgrimage and healing. The church is well known for its Jesse window, completed on 1533. The tower dates back to the 1200’s. Anvil Pottery (01745 890532) is situated opposite the church in the old smithy. The workshop is open to public view (The Laundry use Anvil pottery bowls and platters for serving your breakfast). It's a five-minute drive to the market town of Denbigh – Denbigh Castle, with a history dating back to the 1200’s, overlooks the town – and a 10-minute drive in the opposite direction to Ruthin. Check out Ruthin Gaol (01824 708281), where you can learn about life in the Victorian prison system, while Ruthin Craft Centre (01824 704774), St Peters Square and Ruthin Castle (01824 702664) are all worth a visit. Bodnant Gardens are a 40 minute drive away. Snowdonia, Conwy, Llandudno and their many associated attractions are a fraction over an hour away.

Food and drink

A complimentary welcome hamper of locally produced and homemade food is provided in The Roundhouse on your arrival. It's a 10-minute walk down the lane to the family-run gastro pub Nant y Felin (01745 890834) in the village. If you do the walk we mention to St Dyfnog’s Church, you'll find the local pub opposite – The Kings Head (01745 890278). It's a 10-minute drive to The White Horse (01824 790218) in Hendrerwydd, which comes highly recommended, and The Dinorben Arms (01745 775090) in Bodfari has recently been refurbished and boasts some of the best views in the area.
