Romantically cosy camping cabins on Pembrokeshire's 'Secret Waterway'

Everybody knows about the Pembrokeshire Coast's unmitigated sublime beauty. Everybody. Wales' most filmic stretch of seaboard plays host to some 7.2 million tourists every year. But while most visitors to this breathtaking National Park congregate around St Davids and Fishguard, the Daugleddau Estuary is one of Pembrokeshire's more overlooked coastal gems. Often dubbed 'The Secret Waterway', its secluded coves, Norman castles and cliffs honeycombed with abandoned mines, make this tranquil stretch beside the River Cleddau a prized find for first-timers. Along one of the Cleddau's snaking tributaries by the Westfield Pill Nature Reserve, lies another of the southern Pembrokeshire peninsula's hidden treasures.

Cwtch Camp couldn't be more aptly named. Taken from the Welsh for 'snug' or 'cuddle', this cosy little spot is secreted within 3 acres of bucolic spruce woodland. Comprising 3 hand-crafted wooden eco cabins (the titular cwtches), this low-impact site marries the wild camping experience with the luxury of a fully-insulated cabin. Facilities are surprisingly ample, (communal kitchen, hot shower, flush loo) but it is off-grid, so don't forget that torch!

Each Cwtch is handmade using locally milled, sustainably sourced solid timber. They're bright, secure and roomy while not compromising on cosiness. There is even sound insulated roof tiles so, should it rain, you'll be soothed with a gentle pitter-patter instead of a roaring Biblical downpour. Though Welsh in name, these cannily-crafted cabans are a model of Scandinavian ergonomics, handily sleeping a couple or family of four. All have a south-facing deck, allowing you to bask in the over 1700 hours of sunshine Pembrokeshire enjoys every year.

After a day spent foraging this abundant countryside, or losing hours on the beaches of St Brides Bay, Cwtch's cosy abodes are perfect for snuggling up under thick Welsh wool blankets, with that special someone. Because everybody needs a hug sometimes...

Besides the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, there's plenty of other lesser-known trails including the Landsker Borderlands Trail which circles the eastern bank of the Daugleddau Estuary. Bosherton Lilly Ponds (01646 661359), Picton Castle and Gardens (01437 751326) and Carew Castle and Tidal Mill (01646 651782) are all well worth a sunny day stroll. For two wheels, the Brunel Cycle Trail poses a gentle 9 mile challenge of purpose-built cycle path between Haverfordwest and Neyland. Pembrokeshire's beaches are legendary: Barafundle Bay, Little Haven, Druidstone – all have their own unique character. Newgale Beach is great for watersports. Big Blue Experience (07816169359) can arrange kitesurfing and paddle boarding. A boat trip to see the puffins at Skomer Island (01646 603 110) is truly unmissable. Other great days out can be had at historic St Davids and picture postcard Tenby picture postcard – the latter has The Dinosaur Park (01834 845272) in for kids.

Food & Drink

Guests are greeted with a welcome hamper on arrival comprising fresh farm eggs, a freshly baked loaf, tea, coffee and milk ready for breakfast. Onsite catering can also be arranged for groups hiring the entire site. Ask about the outdoor pizza oven, BBQ or vintage theme afternoon tea (especially popular with hen parties). The Bar at Neyland Marina (01646 602550) is just a 30 minute walk (or 10 minute cycle) away. Its seafood-centric menu uses locally caught fish and the views overlooking Westfield Pill set off the atmosphere nicely. Little Haven and Druidstone Haven are both a 20 minute drive away and boast superb seaside restaurants and pubs including The Swan Inn (01437 781880). St Davids boasts plenty of places to eat and drink too, including sophisticated Cwtch (01437 720491) – no relation. Hidden gem is the Quayside Tearoom (01646 651574) on the point at Lawrenny Quay. The roast lobster just has to be experienced.
