Country life, coastal life and camping life all rolled luxuriously into one

When the first Welsh sheep farmers immigrated to New Zealand they also took with them their trusty Welsh cakes and before long the traditional, sugary bites were renamed Kiwi cakes instead. Thankfully plenty of them still remain – sheep farmers and cakes – so that any weary camper who stay at Hillside Farm today has one happy guarantee: rain or shine, there’ll always be cake at the end of it.

Widen your hungry human instincts beyond their honesty shop and there’s plenty more to be pleased about at Hillside Farm. The views, as the name suggests, are stunning; the welcoming Taylor family, who’ve farmed the area since 1840, are hardly short of local knowledge; and the sights and sounds of agricultural life, from lambs in spring to cattle in summer, give a buzzing backdrop of rural activity.

Central to it all, of course, is the accommodation itself. Safari tents are situated just beyond the family farmhouse. Inside the canvas lodges, there’s a sort of Country Living feel to it all. The open kitchen and dining area has two separate bedrooms feature a double bed in the first and a twin with two full-size single beds in the second. For an extra bit of fun the amazing ‘cupboard bed’ does exactly what it says on the tin – think of opening up a pair of curtains to reveal a cosy, bedded cocoon inside – and has the only downside of inevitable bickering over just who gets to enjoy it.

When you’ve stuffed yourself (and your pockets) with Welsh cakes and homemade produce from the shop, Ellen and Andrew will happily guide you to Rhossili Bay. It’s an easy 5-minute drive to the famous beach – a top spot for surfers and a regular front-runner in the papers’ Top Beaches in Europe articles – or trace your way along the Gower’s excellent coastal path to find quieter, hidden coves.

Canvas Frills Lodges include a double bed, two single beds and a cosy cupboard bed. The lodge has an en-suite bathroom with shower and basin and flushing toilet. There is a kitchenette with outdoor cooker, and canvas covered veranda along with a living space area with sofas, a dining table and the like. Standard Canvas Lodges are similar in style but do not feature en-suite bathroom facilities, a BBQ or large veranda. Towels and bedding are all provided. Campers shouldn't pass up the opportunity to have a farm tour, but there are also chickens around the lodges and coup where you can collect fresh eggs. Views are exceptional.

Suitable For

Kids, families, well-behaved dogs on leads (max 2 per tent) – yes. Campervans, caravans, tents – no.

It's a 5-minute drive to Rhossili Bay, voted the best UK beach and third best in Europe in 2014, so worth visiting! It's a big one with surfers too and there are plenty of rental stores along the sea front if you don't have your own board or are looking for lessons. Rhossili Down, within the AONB, is riddled with footpaths, though growing more renowned in recent years for it's excellent mountain biking. For something of a slower pace delve back in time at the local Parkmill Heritage Centre (01792 371206) interesting and informative but also with plenty to keep little ones busy!

Food & Drink

There are plenty of pubs nearby too. The Kings Head Inn (01792 386212), is the closest, just over a mile away, and though its primary business now seems to be accommodation it doesn't fall down on the local boozer front. There's a host of real ales and an excellent atmosphere beneath its low, exposed timbers.
Brittania Inn in Llanmadoc is a place not to miss, booking is recommended if you want a table. There is a play area with seats  at the back of the pub.
G’Gs in Penclawdd is a must if you like Gelato.   All  homemade on the premises.

Opening Times

Start of April–end October.
